Apple to double annual iPhone output in India by end of 2026 amid trade war

Apple Inc plans to double its annual iPhone production in India to more than 80 million units as it steps up efforts to move beyond China to cut tariff risks and geopolitical tensions.

In the process, by the end of next year, most iPhones that Apple sells in the United States will be sourced from India, Bloomberg reported.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, when harsh lockdown in China hurt production at Apple’s largest plant, the company has been slowly trying to shift out of that country.

Trump tariffs

The tariffs unleashed by US President Donald Trump along with the Beijing-Washington trade tensions have spurred Apple to step up its efforts, Bloomberg added.

The Financial Times reported earlier that Apple’s goal was to source all its US-sold iPhones from India by the end of 2026. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple planned to increasingly prioritise iPhones from the Indian supply chain for US customers.

The California-based company assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in India in the 12 months which ended in March, increasing production by nearly 60 per cent over the previous year.

Boosting production

Apple now produces 20 per cent, or one in five, of iPhones in India. But China remains its biggest production base by far.

Most India-made iPhones are assembled in southern India by the Foxconn Technology Group. Tata Group’s electronics manufacturing arm is also a key supplier. Tata and Foxconn are also building new plants and adding production capacity in southern India.

Shipments of iPhones from India to the US accelerated after Trump announced plans for so-called “reciprocal” tariffs in February.

Supply chain shift

Apple’s average India production and exports surged all through the fiscal year to March.

The Trump administration earlier exempted electronics goods including smartphones and computers from its reciprocal tariffs. This also means that iPhones made in India won’t attract any duties as of now.

Trump’s cumulative levies on China remain at 145 per cent, and will likely force companies such as Apple to intensify their supply chain shift, Bloomberg said.

Apple now assembles its entire iPhone range in India, including the more expensive Titanium Pro models.
