IndiGo unveils ‘IndiGo Lite’ to cut fares for cabin-bag-only flyers
The new fare category is aimed at passengers who prefer to travel light and pay only for the services they require
Private airline IndiGo has introduced a new fare category called ‘IndiGo Lite’, offering a lower-cost option for passengers travelling with only cabin baggage.
Under the new category, passengers flying on direct domestic and international routes can book tickets at a reduced base fare by opting out of checked-in baggage. The fare includes a cabin baggage allowance of up to 7 kg and an automatically assigned seat at no extra charge, the airline said in a statement on Wednesday (July 1).
‘Meant for light travel’
The IndiGo Lite option is available only for economy class bookings made through the airline’s website and mobile app. However, the fare category cannot be booked for connecting flights or group reservations.

“Customers will enjoy a lower base price with an auto-assigned seat at no additional cost, and a cabin bag allowance of up to 7 kgs,” the airline said.
The new fare category is aimed at passengers who prefer to travel light and pay only for the services they require. IndiGo Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh said the launch was part of the airline’s effort to build a more flexible product portfolio and make air travel more accessible. “Designed for customers who travel light and would like to pay only for the services they need, IndiGo Lite is another step towards building a strong, fit-for-purpose product portfolio,” Singh said.
Upgrade at additional cost
Passengers opting for the fare category can upgrade to a 15 kg checked-in baggage allowance by paying a flat fee. The airline advises customers to pre-book the baggage option online through the IndiGo ‘Edit Booking’ portal or at the airport counter.

However, passengers carrying cabin baggage beyond the permitted 7 kg limit may have to pay an excess cabin baggage fee if the weight exceeds the allowance during boarding.
Reduction in operations
The launch comes as IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, adjusts its operations amid changing market conditions. The airline, which operates around 2,200 flights daily, recently reduced its domestic capacity by 5-7 per cent, cutting nearly 110 daily flights.
The reduction was attributed to factors including rising aviation turbine fuel prices and softer travel demand.
