Trump announces 30 pc tariffs on Mexico, EU from August 1

US President Donald Trump issued fresh tariff letters citing Mexico's fentanyl crisis and the EU's non-reciprocal trade as reasons for the new duties

US President Donald Trump on Saturday issued fresh tariff letters for Mexico and the European Union, stating that a 30 per cent tariff will be imposed on goods imported from Mexico and the European Union starting from August 1. Trump shared the letters to the Mexican President and the European Union president on Truth Social.

“It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our trading relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Mexico,” stated Trump in the letter to the Mexican President.

‘Fentanyl crisis’

He further stated that despite Mexico’s effort to secure the US-Mexico border, the country has failed to address the “Fentanyl crisis”, adding " Also, I must mention that the flow of Fentanyl is hardly the only challenge we have with Mexico, which has many tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers which cause unsuitable trade deficits against the United States."

“Mexico has been helping me secure the border, BUT, what Mexico has done, is not enough. Mexico still has not stopped the Cartels who are trying to turn all of North America into a Narco-Trafficking Playground. Obviously, I cannot let that happen!” stated Trump.

No tariff if goods made in US

“Goods transhipped to evade higher Tariffs will be subject to that higher Tariff. As you are aware, there will be no Tariff if Mexico, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely - In other words, in a matter of weeks,” he added.

Warning Mexico against any retaliation against the US tariffs, Trump said that if Mexico decides to raise tariffs on US goods, then whatever number the country chooses to raise them by, it will be added to the 30 per cent the US has imposed.

‘Relationship far from reciprocal’

As for the European Union, Trump stated in his latter “Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from reciprocal. Starting from August 1, 2025, we will charge the European Union a tariff of only 30% on EU products sent into the United States, separate from seasonal tariffs.”

He further stated that there will be no tariffs if the European Union or the companies working within the EU decide to build or manufacture products within the United States, adding that his administration would do everything possible to get approvals "quickly, professionally and routinely". " In other words, in a matter of weeks."
