
Phule row: Anurag Kashyap apologises to Brahmins, says he 'lost composure'
Kashyap had slammed the controversy surrounding the film 'Phule' and replying to a social media user on the issue, he made a contentious remark against Brahmins
The film, which explores the life and legacy of social reformers Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule, had stirred heated debate even before its release over its alleged portrayal of caste. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had demanded certain edits in the Marathi film and the filmmakers had to delay the film's release.
Kashyap had slammed the controversy surrounding the film and while engaging with a social media user on the issue, the director made a contentious remark against the Brahmin community.
His remarks prompted not just online backlash but also a police complaint was filed against him and rape threats were directed at his daughter.

Kashyap's apology
In a lengthy statement posted on X, Kashyap in a lengthy apology in Hindi, has now acknowledged he “lost composure” in a moment of anger and crossed a line.
The Gangs of Wasseypur director also expressed regret for the hurt caused to friends, family, and colleagues, vowing to manage his anger better in the future when addressing contentious issues.
Kashyap had earlier said that his friends and family, including daughter Aaliyah Kashyap, had been receiving death and rape threats due to his comments on Phule and the Brahmin community. He had apologised for his comments on Saturday in an Instagram post.
The post has since been deleted.

FIR filed
An FIR was also filed at Bajaj Nagar police station in Jaipur.
The complainant Anil Chaturvedi alleged that Kashyap had used abusive language towards Brahmins in his post.

The controversy is closely tied to the sensitive caste narratives in Phule, a film that had already sparked polarised reactions. The biographical drama starring Patralekhaa and Pratik Gandhi, will hit theatres on April 25.
