Adani aides press Trump officials to drop $265 million bribery charges: Report
Adani’s representatives are reportedly making the case that his prosecution clashes with Trump's priorities and should be reconsidered
Representatives of Gautam Adani reportedly met officials from US President Donald Trump’s administration to urge them to drop criminal charges against the Indian billionaire in an overseas bribery probe.
A Bloomberg report quoting people familiar with the talks said the lobbying efforts have intensified in recent weeks and could lead to a resolution within the next month.
Bribery allegations
In November 2024, US authorities indicted Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, alleging that they paid heavy bribes to Indian officials to secure Indian power supply contracts.
Prosecutors also alleged that Adani misled US investors during a $750 million Adani Green Energy bond offering, misrepresenting anti-bribery compliance issues.
Misalignment with Trump's policies
The Bloomberg report states that Adani’s representatives are trying to make the case that his prosecution clashes with the Trump administration's priorities and should be reconsidered.
The argument hinges on the idea that pursuing Adani does not align with Trump’s economic or foreign policy objectives.

Bloomberg reported that spokespeople for the Adani Group, the US Justice Department, and the White House declined to comment on the matter.
Reuters also reported that it did not immediately receive responses to its requests for comment from the Adani Group, the White House, and the US DOJ.
Last month, Adani Green Energy said its internal review of the US indictment found no non-compliance or irregularities.
