Iran’s navy ready to deliver ‘bitter defeats’: supreme leader
Iran's “valiant navy” is “ready to inflict new bitter defeats on its enemies,” Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said.
Iran's supreme leader sent the defiant message on Saturday (April 18) as Iran swiftly reimposed restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz.
In a message celebrating the anniversary of the establishment of Iran's army, he hailed Iran's drone strikes that targeted Israel and the US interests across the region during the war.

Iranian gunboats fire at tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Two Iranian gunboats opened fire on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday (April 18), after Iran reversed its decision to reopen the key shipping route and reimposed restrictions. The development comes a day after US President Donald Trump said the naval blockade would continue in “full force.”
The incident occurred in waters between Qeshm Island and Larak Island. According to reports, the tanker was forced to turn back without completing its passage.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations said the vessel’s captain reported that two gunboats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards approached the tanker and opened fire without issuing any radio warning.

US Treasury sanctions Iraqi militias backed by Iran
The US imposed sanctions on seven senior commanders of Iraqi militias that are supported by Iran, including groups like Kataib Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq, for allegedly planning and carrying out attacks on US personnel and coalition forces in the region.
Officials have said the move is part of a broader effort to counter Iran's influence in Iraq and deter further violence against US interests.
The action also signifies a US strategy of using economic pressure, not just military force, to target Iran's network of allies, while warning global banks and firms to stop doing business with anyone tied to these groups.
“We will not allow Iraq's terrorist militias, backed by Iran, to threaten American lives or interests,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said Friday. “Those who enable these militias' violence will be held accountable.”

Lebanese prez says negotiations not weakness, country reclaimed its sovereignty
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Friday struck a defiant tone in his first address since a US-brokered ceasefire took hold, saying he wants Lebanon to chart its own course after weeks of war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The president said he wants to see Lebanon “flourishing, not committing suicide”. He condemned Hezbollah's rocket fire into northern Israel that triggered the latest round of fighting, and criticised Iran's role in arming and backing the group. He framed both as violations of Lebanese sovereignty, and again vowed to disarm non-state groups, including Hezbollah.
In a pointed response to Hezbollah's criticism of Lebanon's direct talks with Israel and claims that Beirut lacks leverage, Aoun said the country will make its own decisions and stand by demands shared across Lebanese society, not ones dictated by Iran or its allies. “There will be no concessions to any principle, no infringement of the sovereignty of this country,” he said.
Aoun also reiterated calls for Israel to halt attacks, withdraw troops, release detainees and allow displaced people to return.
Meanwhile, the US State Department said President Donald Trump's announced prohibition on Israeli strikes inside Lebanon applies only to offensive attacks and not to actions taken in self-defence, and referred to the third point of Wednesday's agreement by Israel and Lebanon.

Foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt hold meeting
Foreign Ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt have discussed ways to enhance cooperation in “key areas of mutual interest” in a third consultative meeting held in Antalya.
The meeting between Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Turkiye Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty was held on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO) on Saturday.
“The Foreign Ministers expressed a shared commitment to advancing this partnership, deepening coordination and expanding collaboration across key areas of mutual interest,” it said. They also exchanged views on evolving regional dynamics, reaffirming the vital role of dialogue and diplomacy in promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
The meeting comes as Pakistan prepares to host the second round of high-stakes talks between the US and Iran to resolve the West Asia conflict, which caused significant economic strain and threatened regional stability.
The US and Iran held rare direct talks in Pakistan last week aimed at ending their conflict, but the talks ended without any agreement.

Iran reimposes Hormuz curbs, blames US for 'deal breach'
Iran swiftly reversed course on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, reimposing restrictions on the critical waterway on Saturday after the US said the move would not end its blockade.
The country's joint military command said on Saturday that it “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state ... under strict management and control of the armed forces.” It warned that it would continue to block transit through the strait as long as the US blockade of Iranian ports remained in effect.
The announcement came the morning after US President Donald Trump said the American blockade “will remain in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with the US, including on its nuclear programme.
Iran’s latest decision underscores rising tensions, as both sides harden their positions over the blockade and broader negotiations.
The development comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in West Asia. A fresh round of talks between Iranian and American negotiators is expected to take place in Islamabad on Monday, Iranian officials familiar with the discussions told CNN. They added that delegations are likely to arrive in the Pakistani capital on Sunday, according to CNN.

Iran’s Ghalibaf accuses Trump of ‘seven false claims in one hour’
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused US President Donald Trump of making “seven false claims in one hour,” as he reiterated Tehran’s stance that it could close the Strait of Hormuz in response to what it describes as a US blockade—countering Trump’s assertion that the route remains “open for business.”
Ghalibaf said Trump made “seven claims in one hour,” all of which he called “false,” though he did not detail them. As Trump addressed an event in Arizona on Friday evening, Ghalibaf posted on X warning that if the blockade continues, the strait would not remain open. He added that transit would follow a “designated route” and require Iranian authorisation.
In his post, Ghalibaf said such “lies” would not succeed in either war or negotiations and stressed that access to the Strait of Hormuz would depend on developments on the ground, not statements on social media.
His remarks come amid ongoing exchanges between US and Iranian officials online, with both sides using social media to make key assertions. He also underscored the role of media and public opinion in the conflict, saying Iran would not be influenced by such efforts.

Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has concluded his three-day visit to Iran as part of Islamabad’s efforts to resolve the conflict between the US and Iran.
Munir, who was heading a high-level delegation to Iran, landed in Tehran on Wednesday (April 15), becoming the first foreign military leader to visit the country since a two-week ceasefire was agreed between Iran and the US on April 8.
During the visit, Munir held discussions with Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian and also met with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the military’s media wing said on Saturday (April 18).

Iran announces partial reopening of its airspace
Iran on Saturday (April 18) announced a partial reopening of its airspace after a seven-week hiatus because of the war, state media reported.
The Civil Aviation Organisation said air routes over eastern Iran were reopened at 7 am (0330 GMT), according to the state-owned IRAN newspaper. It said flights at the country's airports would gradually resume, but did not give a timeframe.
Iran's airspace had been closed since the US and Israel began striking Iran on February 28. The partial reopening has come more than a week into a ceasefire between Iran and the US.
