Rajya Sabha adjourned without business; oaths, tributes held
Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were called off for the day on Thursday without any legislative work being taken up.
When the session began, newly elected members were sworn in to the Upper House. The chamber then stood in silence to honour two figures: veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle, who died on April 12 in Mumbai at 92, and senior Congress leader and former Union minister Mohsina Kidwai, who passed away on April 8 at the age of 94.
Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan also acknowledged recent advances in science and technology, pointing to a milestone at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu.
The 500-MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) reached first criticality on April 6, 2026, a development seen as strengthening India’s long-term energy outlook while pushing forward its homegrown nuclear technology programme.
With that step, India has formally moved into the second phase of its three-stage nuclear power plan, he said.

Lok Sabha briefed on division voting, rules for recording votes
Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh addressed the House, outlining how the chamber’s electronic voting system functions. He noted that proceedings typically rely on a voice vote, but when that outcome is disputed, the House moves to a formal “division,” triggering the Automatic Vote Recorder to log responses as Ayes, Noes or Abstentions.
“The votes will not be registered if the votes are kept pressed before the first gong or if they aren’t pressed simultaneously till the second gong. Members can check their vote on individual results board,” Mr. Singh says.
He also clarified that members seeking to alter their vote have an alternative route. “If any member wishes to change the vote, they may call for voting through slips,” he adds.
