Starmer rules out support for US blockade of Strait of Hormuz
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ruled out British support for US President Donald Trump’s planned blockade of Iranian ports and coastal areas, including the crucial shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz.
During a weekend phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Starmer reiterated the UK stance of the need to “work with a wide coalition of partners to protect freedom of navigation,” given the strategic importance of the Strait for global trade and energy supplies.
He confirmed the presence of mine-sweepers and anti-drone defensive presence in the region as he stressed that British military capability will continue to focus on getting the Strait “fully open”.
“What we’ve been doing over the last few weeks – and this was part of what I was discussing with the Gulf states last week – is bringing countries together to keep the Strait open, not shut,” Starmer told BBC Radio.
“We’re not supporting the blockade and all of the marshalling diplomatically, politically and capability – we do have mine-sweeping capability, I won’t go into operational matters, but we do have that capability – that’s all focused, from our point of view, on getting the Strait fully open,” he said. - 13 April 2026 5:26 PM IST

Steam leak at Koradi Thermal Power Station injures eight workers
Eight workers were injured on Monday (April 13) in a sudden leak of hot steam at the Koradi Thermal Power Station (KTPS) in Nagpur district, Maharashtra, according to State Power Generation Company (MahaGenco).
The incident occurred at 10:20 am when maintenance work was underway at Unit No.10 of the plant. The unit was already shut down at the time of the accident. Workers were engaged in removing clinker - a hard residue formed during coal burning - from a floor located about 13 meters above ground level.
During this process, steam suddenly escaped through a small opening known as a "peephole" in the boiler. The unexpected release of hot steam hit the workers standing nearby, which caused injuries, according to a statement issued by MahaGenco - 13 April 2026 2:07 PM IST
Iranian crude returns to India after 7 years
Two supertankers carrying Iranian crude have arrived at Indian ports on both the east and west coasts, marking the first such deliveries in nearly seven years, according to ship-tracking data.
Felicity, a very large crude carrier operated by the National Iranian Tanker Company, anchored off Sikka on Gujarat's coast late Sunday, carrying about 2 million barrels loaded at Kharg Island in mid-March.
A second tanker, Jaya, moored near Paradip on Odisha coast around the same time. It is transporting a similar volume of crude, lifted from Kharg Island in late February, before the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, followed by Tehran's retaliation.
The shipments are the first Iranian crude cargoes to reach Indian shores in nearly seven years, following a sanctions waiver issued by the United States last month.

Tehran airs Iranian Navy warning to US warship in Hormuz
Footage broadcast by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the country’s state-run media arm, shows Iranian naval forces issuing a warning to a U.S. warship near the Strait of Hormuz, a route Tehran has largely restricted since February.
In the recording, a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps radios the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., stating: "Navy warship 121. This is Sepah Navy station. You must alter course and go back to the Indian Ocean immediately. If you don't obey my order, you will be targeted."
A U.S. crew member answers that the ship is in "transit passage in accordance with international law" and adds, "No challenge is intended to you."
Iranian outlets say the vessels turned away after the exchange, though Washington maintains the Petersen and USS Michael Murphy entered Hormuz as part of mine-clearing preparations.
The episode unfolded alongside unsuccessful U.S.-Iran negotiations in Islamabad.

Oil prices resume their climb, Asian markets decline as US prepares for blockade of Hormuz
Oil prices resumed their climb and Asian markets mostly declined Monday as the US military prepared to blockade ships entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz, where most shipping has been stalled by Iran since the start of the war.
US President Donald Trump announced the planned blockade after US-Iran ceasefire talks in Pakistan ended without an agreement, and the US military said the blockade involving all Iranian ports would begin Monday at 10 am EDT or 5:30 pm in Iran.
Oil prices have been rising as shipping through the strait has essentially stalled since late February. Brent crude oil, the international standard, has gone from roughly $70 per barrel before the war in late February to more than $119 at times.
On Monday, benchmark US crude jumped $8.38 or 8.7% to $104.95 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, rose $7.00, or 7.4%, to $102.23 a barrel.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 lost 1.0% in morning trading to 56,357.40. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.5% to 8,913.50. South Korea's Kospi dipped 1.1% to 5,795.15. Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped nearly 1.5% to 25,513.42, while the Shanghai Composite fell 0.2% to 3,976.57.
Analysts said global trading was expected to remain turbulent for some time. “The outcome of the talks was not really what people were hoping for, that's for certain," Neil Newman, Managing Director, Head of Strategy at Astris Advisory Japan, said in Hong Kong.
“As we stand here at the moment, it doesn't look very nice. Certainly, the oil prices are a big concern.” Wall Street ended last week with a second weekly gain in a row. The S&P 500 inched 0.1% lower Friday after a day of choppy trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.4%. But those gains came amid optimism over the weekend peace talks in Pakistan that was shattered by the later developments.
