Live! Trump taunts Iran as ‘loser of Middle East’ after Pezeshkian apologises to neighbours

Iran’s president says Americans should take ‘unconditionally surrender’ dream ‘to their grave’; tries to assuage Gulf anger as neither side is ready to back down

There is no foreseeable end to the war.

Explosions sent up clouds of dark smoke in the Iranian capital city early Saturday (March 7) and Tehran retaliated by firing missiles at Israel as the United States warned of a forthcoming bombing campaign that officials said would be the most intense yet in the weeklong conflict.

US President Donald Trump's administration approved a new USD 151 million arms sale to Israel after Trump said he would not negotiate with Iran without its “unconditional surrender.” Iran's UN ambassador said the country would “take all necessary measures” to defend itself.

An Associated Press video showed explosions flashing and smoke rising over western Tehran as Israel said it had begun a broad wave of strikes. Also early Saturday, the Israeli military said it was moving to intercept a new salvo of missiles launched from Iran.

Alarm in Saudi, Bahri

In a sign of the widening nature of the conflict, sirens sounded early Saturday in Bahrain as an Iranian attack targeted the island kingdom. And Saudi Arabia said it destroyed drones headed toward its vast Shaybah oil field and shot down a ballistic missile launched toward Prince Sultan Air Base, which hosts US forces.

Govt announces standards of green ammonia, green methanol

The government on Saturday (March 7) announced standards of green ammonia and green methanol for India to accelerate trade of green hydrogen derivatives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The mission was approved by the Union Cabinet on January 4, 2023, with an initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore to make India a global hub for production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The standards issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), outline the emission thresholds and eligibility conditions that must be complied with in order for ammonia and methanol produced to be classified as 'green', i.e., produced using green hydrogen derived from renewable sources.

Green Ammonia Standard for India shall have a total non-biogenic greenhouse gas emission, arising from green hydrogen production, ammonia synthesis, purification, compression, and on-site storage, of not more than 0.38 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of ammonia (kg CO₂ eq/kg NH₃), calculated as an average over the preceding 12-month period.

Green Methanol standard for India shall have a total non-biogenic greenhouse gas emission, arising from green hydrogen production, methanol synthesis, purification, and on-site storage, of not more than 0.44 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of methanol (kg CO₂ eq/kg CH₃OH), calculated as an average over the preceding 12-month period.

Iran president apologises for strikes on neighbours

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has apologised for attacks on regional countries even as its missiles and drones flew toward Gulf Arab states, suggesting Tehran’s political leadership could not exercise full command over the Islamic Republic’s armed forces as an intense campaign of US-Israeli airstrikes rocked the nation, marking one week of the war.

The message from Pezeshkian, one member of a tripartite leadership council overseeing Iran since a February 28 airstrike starting the war killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, again underlined the limited powers being exercised by theocracy’s leaders over its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The Guard, which controls the ballistic missiles targeting Israel and others, answered only to Khamenei and appears to be picking its own targets as the conflict widens.

Pezeshkian's message, seemingly filmed in a hurry without professional broadcast equipment, appeared aimed at assuaging growing Gulf Arab anger over the attacks. But Pezeshkian suggested an order to stop attacks came on Friday, hours before a wave of attacks disrupted flights at Dubai International Airport, targeting a major Saudi oil facility and sending people fleeing for cover multiple times in Bahrain.

But Pezeshkian kept up his criticism of the United States, particularly of President Donald Trump's repeated demand that Iran unconditionally surrender to America.

“That's a dream that they should take to their grave," he said.

Pezeshkian's statement on Saturday said the country's three-man leadership council had been in touch with the armed forces over the attacks.

“I should apologise to the neighbouring countries that were attacked by Iran, on my own behalf,” the president said. “From now on, they should not attack neighbouring countries or fire missiles at them, unless we are attacked by those countries. I think we should solve this through diplomacy.”

At least seven people were killed and 10 others, including three children, were wounded on Saturday (March 7) by a Russian missile that hit a five-story residential building in Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, officials said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and called for an international response. He said that Russia struck Ukraine overnight with 29 missiles and 480 drones, targeting energy facilities in Kyiv and other central regions and with damage reported in at least seven other locations across the country.

According to preliminary data, air defence systems downed 19 missiles and 453 drones, with hits from 9 missiles and 26 strike drones recorded at 22 locations.

In Kharkiv, in Ukraine's northeast, emergency workers were combing the rubble, looking for survivors.

In the Kyiv region, damage from debris was reported in three districts, according to local authorities. In the southern Odesa region, 80 firefighters were called in to help battle massive fires at infrastructure facilities following an attack with multiple drones. Ukraine's state rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said damage to the rail infrastructure forced changes to a number of routes in the centre-west of the country.

Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian rejects US surrender demand

Iran's president said on Saturday (March 7) that a demand by the United States for an unconditional surrender is a “dream that they should take to their grave.”

President Masoud Pezeshkian made the statement in a pre-recorded address aired by state television. He also apologised for Iran's attacks on regional countries, insisting that Tehran would halt them and suggesting they were caused by miscommunication in the ranks.

The comments came as intense Iranian fire targeted the Gulf Arab states early Saturday as Israel and the United States kept up their airstrikes targeting the Islamic Republic. There were repeated attacks Saturday morning on Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump demands 'unconditional surrender' of Iran

US President Donald Trump declared he would accept nothing less than Iran's "unconditional surrender" as the United States and Israel unleashed some of their heaviest strikes yet on the seventh day of the war.

"There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER," Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday, as US strategic bombers pounded Iran and Israeli strikes in Lebanon drove more than a million people from their homes.

Both countries threatened to escalate further. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that US firepower was "about to surge dramatically," while Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir said Israel was entering a new phase that would "further dismantle the regime and its military capabilities."

"We have additional surprises ahead which I do not intend to disclose," Zamir said.
