Israel-Iran conflict LIVE | Trump warns Israel not to target Iran, says both sides broke truce

The US President has accused Israel of immediately escalating the conflict after truce was made

US President Donald Trump claimed a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was “in effect” on Tuesday (June 24), after expressing deep frustration with both sides and accusing them of violating the agreement he brokered.

Israel earlier accused Iran of launching missiles into its airspace after the truce was supposed to take effect. The Iranian military denied firing on Israel, state media reported.

Trump expressed anger and frustration as he told reporters at the White House that both Israel, a close ally, and Iran had violated the ceasefire plan. But later he said the deal was saved, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he held off on tougher strike against Iran after speaking to Trump.

He earlier accused Israel of immediately escalating the conflict after the agreement was made. "Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I've never seen before, the biggest load that we've seen."

Trump concluded by slamming both nations' actions, stating, "We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f*** they're doing." This outburst underscores his apparent exasperation with the ongoing tensions in the region.

Ceasefire plan

Earlier, the two countries accepted the ceasefire plan proposed by Trump to end their 12-day conflict that roiled the Middle East, after Tehran launched a retaliatory limited missile attack on a US military base in Qatar.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also confirmed that the Israel has accepted the ceasefire deal with Iran. The prime minister’s office has released a statement in which it said Israel has achieved its goals against Iran, according to a report in The Times of Israel. “Israel has removed a dual immediate existential threat – both in the nuclear and ballistic missile fields,” the statement reads.

Netanyahu's statement added that the IDF “achieved full air control over Tehran’s skies, inflicted severe damage on the military leadership, and destroyed dozens of central Iranian government targets.”

Kremlin welcomes Israel-Iran ceasefire, hopes truce is ‘sustainable’

Russia on Tuesday welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and hoped the truce would be a “sustainable” one.

"If it really is possible to reach a ceasefire, then this can only be welcomed. This is what the Russian Federation has been calling for from the very beginning of this conflict. Therefore, this can and should be welcomed," Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media.

"We hope this will be a sustainable ceasefire," he said.

Peskov said he "saw statements from the office of the Israeli prime minister, heard statements from (Iranian Foreign Minister) Abbas Araghchi, and saw numerous statements from President (Donald) Trump".

“So far, we have not seen or heard any other statement from Tehran,” he pointed out.

Responding to a question about Moscow’s opinion on the sustainability of the ceasefire, Peskov noted, "There were contacts mediated by Qatar, as well as contacts between the US president and a number of his counterparts in the Middle East" before the announcement.

"We don't know all the details to the end, so we can't say anything here, but from the very beginning, we called for military solutions to the problem to be discarded and for any unprovoked attacks on a State, in this case Iran, to be excluded. And for the solution and settlement of existing problems to be carried out by political and diplomatic means," Peskov said.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a similar statement during his address to the delegates of more than 40 countries attending the annual Primakov Readings, said Russia welcomed the reaching of any such agreement.

He, however, noted there were reports of violations from both sides since the announcement of the ceasefire.

“So we will draw hasty conclusions on the basis of fragmented information. But we are for peace,” Lavrov said. PTI

Farooq Abdullah welcomes ceasefire between Iran and Israel, calls it 'good step'

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah Tuesday welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, saying it was a good step, and expressed hope that it lasts so that innocent people do not get killed.

Responding to a question whether the US surrendered before Iran, the NC chief said the decision stemmed out of humanity, but there was global pressure on the US.

"Nobody has surrendered before anyone, neither Iran nor America. But out of humanity, they said that this should be stopped. This would have impacted their economy, and the economy of the rest of the world," he said, adding, "there was global pressure on America to end this".
