Iran rejects ceasefire plan
Iran's state-run IRNA news agency said Tehran has rejected the latest ceasefire proposal and wants a permanent end to the war.
The report comes shortly before US President Donald Trump's deadline for Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or see its power plants and bridges attacked.
The news agency said Iran had conveyed its response to the US through Pakistan.
“We won't merely accept a ceasefire,” Mojtaba Ferdousi Pour, head of the Iranian diplomatic mission in Cairo, told The Associated Press on Monday. “We only accept an end of the war with guarantees that we won't be attacked again.”
On the Strait of Hormuz, Ferdousi Pour said Iranian and Omani officials were working on a mechanism for administrating the shipping chokepoint.

India has enough fiscal space to push capex, support sectors impacted by West Asia crisis: FM
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said fiscal prudence has given the government enough room to push capex and support sectors impacted by the West Asia crisis.
Besides, she said the Reserve Bank can go in for further rate cut to deal with the emerging situation.
Highlighting the importance of a good public finance policy in challenging times, the Finance Minister said, it improves the counter-cyclical capacity , especially the ability to 'lean against the wind' in economic downturn.
Today, many countries with high debt and large deficits have no room to manoeuvre and they face a grim choice between austerity and instability, she said at an event organised by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) in New Delhi.
On the contrary, she said, "India has fiscal space — room to maintain our capex programme, room for the RBI to cut rates, room to offer targeted support to affected sectors. This is the dividend of a decade of fiscal discipline. This is the strategic value of fiscal prudence that pays dividends across decades." Therefore, she said, India has been able to reduce the excise duty on diesel and petrol; and specific exemptions were given on critical petrochemical products and SEZs to operate in Domestic Tariff Area.

2 Indian-flagged LPG tankers sail through Strait of Hormuz, 16 still stranded
Two more Indian-flagged LPG tankers have safely crossed the war-hit Strait of Hormuz and are headed for Indian ports even as 16 other vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, officials said on Monday (April 6). LPG vessel Green Sanvi carrying 46,650 tonnes of LPG is scheduled to reach an Indian port on April 7 while Green Asha with 15,500 tonnes of cargo is scheduled to touch the Indian coast on April 9, said Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary in Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways at a news briefing.
"Indian maritime operations remain safe and uninterrupted amid West Asia crisis. 16 Indian-flagged vessels with 433 seafarers are in the region; two LPG carriers, Green Sanvi and Green Asha, safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz," he said.
With this, eight Indian-flagged LPG tankers have safely transited through the strategic waterway, which has remained effectively shut since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28 and Tehran's sweeping retaliation.
Of the vessels still stuck in the Persian Gulf, one is of a loaded liquefied natural gas (LNG), two are LPG tankers (one loaded and one empty), six are crude carriers (five loaded, one empty), three are container ships, one is a dredger, one is carrying chemical cargo, and two are bulk carriers, he said.
Asked about reports of Iran charging a fee for letting ships cross the strait, Mangal said, "we have no information of such payments".
For a country that relies on imports from Gulf nations to meet as much as 60 per cent of its cooking gas needs, the arrivals will help ease the worst LPG shortage it is battling in decades. India consumed 33.15 million tonnes of LPG last year, with imports accounting for about 60 per cent of demand. As much as 90 per cent of those imports came from West Asia.

US and Israel blamed for strikes on Iran's key gas field
Iranian media outlets reported strikes on facilities at Iran's South Pars natural gas field on April 6, with Fars news agency and Mizan news agency both blaming the US and Israel. Neither country immediately claimed responsibility for the attack at Asaluyeh in Bushehr province.
The strike follows a previous Israeli attack on South Pars that saw Iran increasingly target Gulf Arab oil and gas sites in retaliation. Tensions have sharpened further after Trump warned this week of possible attacks on Iranian power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened.

Iran warns of 'devastating retaliation' as Trump's threats draw war crimes charge
Iran's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi has accused US President Donald Trump of threatening to commit war crimes, after Trump made public statements about destroying Iranian power plants and bridges. Gharibabadi cited provisions of international law in his post on X, warning that such strikes on civilian infrastructure would constitute violations under international humanitarian law. Iran's central military command backed the warning, saying any US attack on civilian targets would be met with "much more devastating" retaliation.
The escalation comes after US-Israeli strikes on Monday killed the intelligence chief of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to the IRGC. The killing has sharply raised tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Iran's military signalling it is prepared to respond with significant force if the conflict widens.

Tamil Nadu CM, Cong in tacit understanding with BJP: Mamata
TMC chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the BJP had entered into a "tacit understanding" with the Congress and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, claiming that many IAS and IPS officers from West Bengal had been sent to the southern state as poll observers, hampering development work in the state.
She claimed that though five states are going to the polls simultaneously, the Election Commission transferred around 500 officers in West Bengal in comparison to a handful in other poll-bound states.
Banerjee said she would tour the country to forge opposition unity against the saffron party after the Assembly elections.
Addressing a poll rally in Nadia district in support of party candidates, the CM claimed that several officers of the West Bengal cadre had been sent to Tamil Nadu as observers by the Election Commission following the announcement of Assembly polls.
"You (BJP) must be having some tacit understanding with the Congress and Stalin," she alleged.
"They (BJP) are placing their own officers in prominent positions in West Bengal to ensure their free movement," she claimed.

Unnao rape case: SC defers hearing on CBI's plea against suspension of Sengar's life term
The Supreme Court on Monday deferred to the first week of May the hearing on a petition filed by the CBI challenging the suspension of life imprisonment of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sura Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the matter will be taken up after a nine-judge bench completes hearing on the Sabarimala review proceedings.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Sengar, raised the issue of non-hearing of the pleas in another case related to the alleged custodial death of the victim's father in the Delhi High Court and said that a 10-year jail term was handed down to Sengar in that case.
"Ten years is likely to be completed soon and yet no substantial hearing has taken place in the high court. I should get bail in this matter," he said.
It was alleged by him that even the victim's lawyer is taking adjournments in the high court.
Lawyer Mehmood Pracha, counsel for the victim, said that only one adjournment has been sought in the high court.
The CJI noted the consent of both sides that no adjournment will be sought in the Delhi High Court in another case involving Sengar as one of the accused.

Rupee rises 14 paise to close at 93.04 against US dollar
The rupee gained 14 paise to close at 93.04 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday, following the Reserve Bank's initiatives designed to curb speculative fervour and dampen volatility in the rupee.
Forex traders said that though the RBI measures are rupee-positive, unabated withdrawal of foreign capital, a strengthening dollar, and rising crude oil prices amid a volatile geopolitical situation continue to put pressure on the rupee.
The RBI tightened its rules to curb speculative positions and capped banks' net open positions at USD 100 million.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 93.13 against the US dollar and in intraday trade gained momentum to touch a high of 92.79 against the greenback.
At the end of Monday's trading session, the rupee was quoted at 93.04 (provisional), up 14 paise from its previous closing price.
On Thursday, the rupee logged one of its steepest single-day gains in many years and settled 152 paise higher at 93.18 against the US dollar after the Reserve Bank stepped in with a slew of measures to restrict banks from onshore forward markets.
