Bangladesh: Yunus should be imprisoned for life, says Taslima Nasreen

He has unleashed a torrent of unrest in the country, orchestrated jihadi mayhem, destruction, and arson by setting his followers loose, she alleged

In a scathing attack on the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus, controversial author Taslima Nasreen has lambasted the Nobel laureate demanding that he should be imprisoned for life over heinous crimes that she alleged were committed during his tenure.

Referring to media reports claiming that Yunus is considering resigning from his post, Nasreen said that he should not be allowed to leave Bangladesh and instead should be imprisoned. Reports earlier suggested that Yunus was considering stepping down from his post due to growing public discontent over stalled reforms and demands from multiple political camps in Bangladesh.

Moving abroad?

“I’ve heard that Mr. Yunus is going to resign and will go off to live the rest of his life in comfort in Europe or America. Why should he be allowed to leave? He should be imprisoned,” wrote Nasreen in a lengthy post on X on Saturday (May 24).

She further alleged that soon after Yunus returned to Bangladesh he got five cases against him dismissed. Nasreen accused Yunus of inciting mobs to violence and spreading hatred to wipe out the opposition.

‘Incited violence’

“From his position as Chief Advisor, he incited jihadi militants and mobs to violence, spread hatred and malice to eliminate the opposition, pressed the reset button to provoke the Tawhidi crowd into bloodshed — so many have been harmed, so many lives lost,” stated Nasreen.

She demanded that Yunus be brought to justice for his actions during his tenure, as “he has given birth to a generation that is frenzied, unstable, irrational, and intolerant.”

“He has unleashed a torrent of unrest in the country, orchestrated jihadi mayhem, destruction, and arson by setting his followers loose,” added Nasreen.

Deteriorating ties

She accused Yunus of putting “countless innocent people” behind bars by framing them in false murder cases and handing over corridors and ports to “foreign military powers.” She further alleged that Yunus had ruined relations with neighbouring countries.

“Should he walk away free without facing any justice for all this? He must be punished for his crimes. He must spend the rest of his life in prison. So many others have been sentenced to life for far less — why should he be spared?” stated Nasreen.

Her comments come at a time when the relationship between India and Bangladesh has become frosty following the ouster of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a violent student agitation which forced her to flee the country and take refuge in India.
