Putin, Trump discuss Iran conflict, Ukraine war in 90-minute 'frank' call

The two leaders discussed Iran ceasefire, with Putin warning the US against the ‘extremely damaging consequences’ of escalation; Moscow signals support for diplomacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a lengthy phone conversation on Wednesday (April 29), focusing on the escalating Middle East crisis and the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.

The call, which lasted more than 90 minutes, was described by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as “frank and businesslike”. According to Moscow, the discussion paid particular attention to tensions involving Iran and the wider Persian Gulf region.

Putin cautions Trump about escalation of Iran war

Putin welcomed Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire with Iran, calling it a step that could create space for negotiations and help stabilise the volatile situation.

However, he warned of “inevitable and extremely damaging consequences” if the United States and Israel resume military action, cautioning that such escalation would affect not only the region but the broader international community.

Russia also reiterated its willingness to assist diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.

Ukraine accused of prolonging conflict

On Ukraine, the leaders exchanged views on the battlefield situation. Ushakov said Putin briefed Trump on developments along the front line, claiming Russian forces hold the “strategic initiative”. Both leaders, according to the Kremlin, expressed similar assessments of the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing it of prolonging the conflict with European backing.

The war, now in its fifth year since Russia’s 2022 invasion, has caused widespread devastation, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced.

Putin proposes temporary ceasefire with Ukraine

Putin also proposed a temporary ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9, marking the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Trump backed the idea, noting the symbolic importance of the occasion.

The Kremlin said this year’s Victory Day events in Moscow would be scaled down amid concerns over potential Ukrainian retaliatory strikes.
