PM Narendra Modi visits Ahmedabad, holds review meetings with top officials of the Gujarat government


Aviation watchdog DGCA on Friday (June 13) ordered enhanced safety inspection of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet powered by GEnx engines, a day after 241 people onboard died in the plane crash in Ahmedabad.

The enhanced DGCA inspection will include checks of various systems and a review of take-off parameters of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India, owned by the Tata Group.

Air India's fleet includes 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft and 7 Boeing 787-9 planes.

PM's review meet

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting in Ahmedabad with top officials of the Gujarat government after visiting the site of the Air India plane crash.

During the meeting, PM Modi was briefed about the series of events that unfolded after the plane crash in which 265 people lost their lives on Thursday, and he also gave instructions to officials. He visited the crash site and city civil hospital earlier in the day.

“We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heart-breaking manner is beyond words. Condolences to all the bereaved families. We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come. Om Shanti,” Modi said in a post on X.

Modi also met the family of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and offered his condolences. The former CM died in the flight crash.

    265 bodies in hospital, says police

    As many as 265 bodies have been brought to the city civil hospital following the horrific crash, a police official said.

    "265 bodies have reached the hospital as per the message we received," Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai told reporters.

    Four MBBS students killed

    Four MBBS students and a doctor's wife were among those killed after the London-bound Air India plane crashed into residential quarters of the BJ Medical college. 

    Two other MBBS students and three relatives of doctors are missing. "While four MBBS students living in the hostel died, 19 were injured. Five of them are serious. Two third-year students are untraceable," college dean Dr Minakshi Parikh said.

    "A doctor's wife was also killed while two relatives of other doctors were injured. Three members of a doctor's family went missing after the incident. All other doctors and relatives are safe," said Parikh.

    Ready for any help, says Trump

    US President Donald Trump has expressed deep sorrow over the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, describing it as "one of the worst in aviation history”.

    "The plane crash was terrible. I've already told them (India), anything we can do, it's a big country, a strong country, and they'll handle it, I'm sure," he told reporters at White House in response to queries on the crash.

    Trump emphasised readiness of the United States to help India in any capacity.

    He said that he has let India know that “anything we can do. We'll be over there immediately. But it was a horrific crash. It looks like most are gone"

    Impossible to save anyone, says Amit Shah

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday that the temperature in the Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad was so high due to burning fuel that there was no chance to save anyone.

    “There was 1.25 lakh litre of fuel inside the plane and it caught heat so it was impossible to save anyone,” Shah told reporters.

    The entire nation is in deep shock following the tragedy, he told reporters.

    Shah also expressed condolences to relatives of those killed in the accident.

    “The number of those killed will be officially released by the authorities after DNA test and identification of the victims,” Shah said.

    "The good news is that one person survived the crash and I am coming here after meeting him,” he said.

    "The process of collecting DNA samples from bodies of those killed in the plane crash is over. Forensic Science Laboratory and National Forensic Sciences University in Gujarat will conduct DNA tests of the victims,” he said.
