Govt says Pakistan launched drones and missiles towards military bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur, and India successfully foiled attacks
India has said that Pakistan military deployed around 300-400 drones, likely made in Turkey, to unleash an attack on over 25 Indian cities in the intervening night of May 8-9.
At a Ministry of External Affairs press briefing on Friday evening, the government said Pakistan did not close its airspace, and used civilian planes as shields. The govt said Pakistan launched drones and missiles towards military bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur, and India successfully foiled the attacks.
An armed UAV of Pakistan also attempted to target Bathinda military station, which was quickly detected and neutralised, the govt said.
Earlier, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday (May 9) said it has foiled an infiltration bid from across the International Border in Jammu, killing at least seven terrorists and destroying a Pak Rangers' post.
The terrorists were engaged around 11 pm on Thursday in Samba district after a “big group” of theirs was detected by the “surveillance grid”. This infiltration bid was supported by fire from Pakistan Rangers post at Dhandhar, a BSF spokesperson said.
He said the troops neutralised the infiltration bid, killing “at least” seven terrorists and causing “extensive” damage to the Dhandhar post. Officials said there could be more terrorists, who could have been neutralised.
IPL suspended
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was on Friday suspended indefinitely due to the escalating military confrontation between India and Pakistan with a BCCI official saying that continuing the event in the current situation would not look appropriate.
A cloud of uncertainty had loomed over the future of the ongoing edition since the cancellation of Thursday's match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala midway following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
“It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war,” a BCCI official told PTI, confirming the suspension of the high-profile league, which was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata as per the original schedule. Twelve league matches and four knockout games are left to be played.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday urged people to reject fake news from “vested interests” and comply with official guidelines, amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

BSF kills seven terrorists in Jammu
The Border Security Force on Friday said it has killed seven terrorists who were trying to infiltrate from across the India-Pakistan International Border in Jammu, and also destroyed a Rangers post.
The incident took place in the Samba sector on the intervening night of May 8-9 after a "big group" of terrorists was detected by the surveillance grid.
This infiltration bid was supported by fire from Pakistan Rangers post Dhandhar, a BSF spokesperson said.
He said the troops neutralised the infiltration bid, killing at least seven terrorists and caused extensive damage to the Dhandhar post It also shared a thermal imager clip of the destruction of the said post.
The force is on high alert in the wake of the current hostilities between the two countries following the Pahalgam terrorist attack of April 22 and India's strike on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation.

Security stepped up at vital installations in Delhi
Heavy security was deployed at the vital installations in Delhi on Friday, including government buildings and areas with high footfalls, as tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pakistani military targeted several border areas using drones and missiles on Thursday night.
A senior police officer said all vital installations, including government buildings, sewage treatment plants, water treatment plants, courts, and foreign embassies are being safeguarded by deploying additional forces, including paramilitary personnel.
Police also strengthened vigil in areas with high footfalls, including markets, railway stations, malls, parks and Metro stations, the officer said.
Amid the soaring tensions, leaves of all Delhi Police personnel were cancelled on Thursday night.
"Night vigil has been intensified. We will deploy extra force in every sensitive area," an officer said.

J&K Cong slams Pakistan for targeting Jammu, says it will pay for its sins
The Jammu and Kashmir Congress on Friday condemned Pakistan for targeting Jammu and other areas in the region with missiles and drones on Thursday night, saying the neighbouring country “will have to pay for its sins”.
“J-K Pradesh Congress Committee strongly condemns the provocative and escalatory actions of Pakistan by launching drone and missile attacks in Jammu city and other parts last night,” the party's chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said.
"Pakistan will pay for its sins," he added.
