Pahalgam LIVE: 500 Pakistanis leave India; demolitions continue in Kashmir

Modi says attack reflects desperation and cowardice of terrorists and their mentors at a time when peace was returning to Kashmir

Pakistan wants the involvement of Russia and China in investigating the Pahalgam terror attack, according to a media report.

In a recent interview to Russian government-run RIA Novosti news agency, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said, “I think Russia or China or even Western countries can play a very, very positive role in this crisis and they can even set up an investigation team that should be assigned this job to investigate whether India or Modi is lying or he is telling the truth. Let an international team find out.”

‘When peace was returning…’

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (April 27) reiterated his warning to the perpetrators and plotters of the terror attack in which terrorists snuffed out 26 innocent lives. He said those behind the attack will be served the most stringent punishment.

In his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, Modi said the solidarity of Indians in the war against terrorism is the country’s biggest strength.

He said the incident reflected the desperation and cowardice of terrorists and their mentors at a time when peace was returning to Kashmir, tourism was seeing a record surge, democracy was turning stronger and new opportunities were being created for the youth.

“Enemies of the country and Kashmir did not like it,” he said, adding that they wanted the Valley to be destroyed again.

“In the war against terrorism, the unity of the country, the solidarity of 140 crore Indians, is our biggest strength. The world is watching that India is speaking in one voice against the attack,” he said, stressing that this unity is the biggest basis of the decisive battle against terrorism.

NIA takes over probe

The Centre on Sunday handed over the probe into the terror attack to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Eyewitnesses are being questioned in minute detail to piece together the sequence of events that led to one of the worst terror attacks in Kashmir, they said.

The entry and exit points are being closely scrutinised by the investigating NIA teams for clues to the modus operandi of the terrorists, the officials said.

The teams, aided by forensic and other experts, are checking the entire area thoroughly for evidence to expose the terror conspiracy that led to the horrendous attack that has shocked the nation, they said.

Unprovoked firing by Pak

Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing, violating the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir for the third time in a row on the intervening night of April 26 and 27. The Indian Army “responded effectively” to the firing, officials said on Sunday.

The Indian Army said its troops “responded effectively with appropriate small arms fire”.

Only 1 Pakistani citizen stays in Assam: CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said only one Pakistani national stays in the state after being married to a citizen of Tinsukia district.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an official function in Dibrugarh, Sarma said the state government has already contacted the Centre seeking clarification of the foreign national's status on the backdrop of the recent development.

Following the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead, the Centre has asked Pakistanis to leave India. "We have only one Pakistani citizen in Tinsukia district and she is married to a local person. She is the only Pakistani citizen in Assam and has applied for a long-term Visa.

"We have requested the Government of India to clarify whether she should be sent back or not," the CM said.

Houses of 3 more suspected terrorists razed; political parties urge Centre to be cautious

Authorities have demolished the houses of three alleged active terrorists in Bandipora, Pulwama and Shopian districts of Jammu and Kashmir as security forces continued their crackdown on the terror ecosystem following the Pahalgam terror attack.

With this, nine houses of suspected terrorists and overground workers of terror outfits have been razed so far since the April 22 Baisaran attack.

Security forces have raided more than 500 locations in the Valley in just five days and grilled hundreds of suspects. Political parties have urged the Centre to ensure that innocent people are not targeted while it goes after terrorists.

Carrying on with the targeted demolition drive, authorities pulled down the house of Adnan Shafi at Wandina in Shopian district on Saturday night, officials said and claimed that Shafi had joined terrorist ranks last year.

The house of another suspected active terrorist Amir Nazir was pulled down in Pulwama district, they said.

In Bandipora district, the house of suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, Jameel Ahmad Shergojri, was razed. Officials said Shergojri has been an active terrorist since 2016.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said the Centre should proceed carefully and avoid alienating innocent people while hunting down terrorists.

The former chief minister alleged there were reports of “thousands being arrested and scores of houses of common Kashmiris being demolished along with those of militants”.

“I appeal to the government to direct the authorities to take care that innocent people are not made to bear the brunt as alienation aids terrorists’ goals of division and fear,” she added.

Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also asked the Centre not to punish innocent Kashmiris in its quest for justice for the victims of the terror attack.

“I urge the authorities that in seeking justice for the innocent victims do not punish innocent Kashmiri families,” he said on X.

People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone said those handling law and order should not do anything that can reverse the mindset that has changed after the Pahalgam attack. “The mass protests against the Pahalgam killings was a rare occurrence, a first of its kind in the last 78 years... This a monumental shift, a milestone, but fragile at the same time. I hope that those in charge of law and order do understand the significance of the shift and don't do anything erroneously which impedes the shift or facilitates a return to the earlier mindset,” he wrote on X.

The former minister said there was a general feeling across the Valley that the whole family was being punished for the actions of one person.

Tourist destinations in Bhaderwah reopened for visitors

The high-altitude tourist destinations of Guldanda and Chattargalla in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district were reopened for visitors on Sunday amid heightened security arrangements including deployment of army.

The two much-sought after tourist destinations along the Bhaderwah-Pathankot national highway were closed for visitors as a precautionary measure in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.

After fresh review of the security arrangements along with deployment of additional forces, both the destinations were opened on Sunday morning with Army and police deployments welcoming the holiday-makers by presenting roses, a development which brought cheers on the faces of the locals connected with tourism.
