Pahalgam attack: Won't allow single drop of water to flow into Pak: Centre
The government plans to strengthen existing dams and build infrastructure to better manage India’s own water needs, especially in border states like Punjab and J&K
India on Thursday (April 25) informed Pakistan of its decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance with immediate effect, saying Pakistan has breached conditions of the treaty. The letter came in response to the deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in which 26 people, mostly tourists were killed by terrorists.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to discuss the fallout of the Pahalgam terror attack on tourists. Rahul, who earlier interacted with the injured tourists at the Army hospital in Srinagar, met Abdullah at his residence, officials said.
In Delhi, popular shopping hubs like Connaught Place, Sadar Bazar and Chandni Chowk were among the more than 900 markets that wore a deserted look on Friday as traders observed a 'Delhi Bandh' to protest against the Pahalgam terror attack.
Various merchant associations from sectors such as textiles, spices, utensils, and bullion also kept their shutters down.
Water treaty
Sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting Jammu and Kashmir impedes India's rights under the Indus Waters Treaty, India's Secretary of Water Resources Debashree Mukherjee said in a letter addressed to her Pakistani counterpart, Syed Ali Murtaza.
"The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir," the letter read. "The resulting security uncertainties have directly impeded India's full utilisation of its rights under the treaty," the letter said.
On Thursday, the Centre also convened an all-party meeting where it briefed leaders about the attack and heard their views.

Pahalgam attack : Kartarpur corridor remains open
Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Kartarpur corridor at Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab's Gurdaspur district remains open for pilgrims to offer prayers at the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in the neighbouring country.
The Kartarpur corridor links the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur. Devotees on Friday continued to visit the Kartarpur corridor at Dera Baba Nanak for paying obeisance at the historic gurdwara in Pakistan.
The pilgrims sought that the Kartarpur corridor should remain open. "The corridor should remain open for pilgrims," said a Sikh devotee from Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar district.

Pahalgam attack : Sharad Pawar questions Centre's claim on ending terrorism
Questioning the Centre over the Pahalgam terror attack, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said while the government kept claiming that terrorism had ended in Kashmir, the attack showed security lapses. He also said that corrective measures were required to be taken urgently.
Speaking to reporters he said that in view of the attack on a "safe place" like Pahalgam, one needs to exercise caution in claiming that terrorism has been defeated in Kashmir.
Pawar also said that as the terror attack was against the country, nobody should indulge in politicising the issue.
The terror attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam on April 22 left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.
"The action by terrorists is against India and when there is an activity which is against the country, there should not be any room for politicising it," Pawar said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday convened an all-party meeting to discuss the April 22 Pahalgam attack, Pawar said.
"From our side, MP Supriya Sule attended the meeting. I am happy that all the parties have taken a stand to cooperate with the government. Whatever decision is taken, we are with the government and the government should look into this with more seriousness," he said.
"The government keeps on claiming that they have destroyed terrorism in Kashmir and now there is no need to worry. I am glad if this (end of terrorism in the valley) is happening, but the recent terror attack shows that there are some lapses and urgent steps need to be taken to address these lapses. On that front also, we will extend our cooperation," Pawar said.
