Parliament LIVE | Privilege motion against Sonia for remarks on President

The motion has been moved by BJP MPs who called Sonia’s comment “derogatory and slanderous”

The Parliament session on Monday (February 3) began on a stormy note with the Opposition protesting over the Maha Kumbh stampede.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, while speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address on January 31, called her speech a repeat of the government’s “laundry list” of this outlined last year.

Make in India has failed: Rahul

He said successive governments, be it the UPA or the present NDA, have not been able to tackle unemployment and give a clear-cut answer to youth about employment.

Rahul said while 'Make in India' was a good idea, the prime minister "pretty much failed".

He claimed the reason China is sitting inside the country is because 'Make in India' has failed and India is refusing to produce. "I am worried that India is going to give up this revolution to the Chinese once again," he said.

Hitting back, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asked Rahul to substantiate his claims on the government's foreign policy.

Rahul’s claim that S Jaishankar went to the US to get an invite for Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Donald Trump’s “coronation” was received with a rebuttal by the foreign minister who called it a deliberate “falsehood”.

Privilege motion against Sonia

Later in the day, a group of BJP MPs moved a notice for breach of Parliamentary Privilege, Ethics and Propriety motion against Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi for her remarks against President Droupadi Murmu. Sonia had called Murmu a “poor thing” while commenting on her addresses to Parliament on the opening day of the Budget session.

Alleging use of “derogatory and slanderous words” to describe the President, the BJP MPs said such behaviour warrants “serious consideration and disciplinary action”.

Deliberate falsehood on my US visit: Jaishankar slams Rahul

"Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi deliberately spoke a falsehood about my visit to the US in December 2024. I went to meet the Secretary of State and NSA of the Biden Administration. Also to chair a gathering of our Consuls General. During my stay, the incoming NSA-designate met with me. At no stage was an invitation in respect of the PM discussed. It is common knowledge that our PM does not attend such events. In fact, India is generally represented by Special Envoys. Rahul Gandhi’s lies may be intended politically. But they damage the nation abroad," MEA Jaishankar said in a post on X.

President's address same laundry list of things govt has done: Rahul in Lok Sabha

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday said the address of the President to the two Houses was similar to the one made last year, and claimed that it was the same "laundry list" of things the government has done.

Participating in a debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address on January 31, Rahul said successive governments, be it the UPA or the present NDA, have not been able to tackle unemployment and give a clear-cut answer to youth about employment.

He also said 'Make in India' was a good idea, but the prime minister "pretty much failed".

Rahul said the reason China is sitting inside this country is because 'Make in India' has failed and India is refusing to produce. "I am worried that India is going to give up this revolution to the Chinese once again," he said.

While talking of the Congress' vision of a president's address, Rahul said we would not send our foreign minister to the United States to get our prime minister invited to the US President's 'coronation'.

Hitting back, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asked Gandhi to substantiate his claims on the government's foreign policy.

"You cannot make such unsubstantiated claims," he said.

"I heard the President's address. I must say I struggled through the President's address to maintain my attention on what was being said, because I've heard pretty much the same address before -- it's the same list of things that the government has done," he said in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul said he is being critical about what is being said, and this is not the type of President's address he expected.

In tributes to Kumbh stampede victims, LoP Kharge says 'thousands died'

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday paid tributes to "thousands" who died in the January 29 Maha Kumbh stampede, triggering an uproar from the treasury benches even as Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar asked him to retract the statement.

Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, was quick to add that "this is my estimate (and) if this is not right you (the government) should tell what is the truth". He said he was ready to be corrected.

"I did not say 'thousands' to blame anyone. But how many people died, give that information at least. I will apologise if I am wrong. They should give figures how many died, how many are missing," he said.

There was a stampede during the Amrit Snan on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya on January 29. According to the figures provided by the Uttar Pradesh government, 30 people were killed and 60 others were injured.

However, while participating in a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in Rajya Sabha, Kharge used the phrase "the thousands who died in Kumbh" to pay tributes to the deceased.

"I pay my tributes to the people who died in Maha Kumbh... the thousands who died in Kumbh," he said, leading to the protest by the ruling members.

Kharge, however, added this was his estimate and the government should provide the "correct" figures.

"This is my estimate, if this is not right you should tell what is the truth... I am asking you to declare what the actual numbers are. If I am wrong I am ready to correct," he said.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar urged him to retract his statement.

"The LoP has indicated a scenario using figures to the extent of thousands. I appeal to him, in this House, whatever is spoken, carries great weight. You have spoken something which has numbed everyone," Dhankhar said.

"A message that goes from here, even if it is contradicted, goes to the whole world. Can you go to that extent? I would appeal to you as one of senior most leaders of this country, if you put a figure in thousands I can only appeal to your conscious," he said. Kharge said he did not mention the figure to blame anyone.

Even as Chairman Dhankhar called Kharge making the claim a "very sad moment" and asked him to withdraw his statement, the Leader of Opposition insisted the government give the correct figures and continued with his speech. He also paid tributes to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, calling him the architect of the modern Indian economy.
