AAIB says ‘significant progress’ made in Air India crash probe, a year after tragedy

AAIB says significant progress has been made in analysing flight data, aircraft systems and other evidence as the investigation continues

A year after the fatal Air India Flight AI-171 crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is probing the incident, said that “significant progress” has been made in the investigation, adding that it was not aimed at apportioning blame or liability. The crash resulted in the deaths of 41 of the 242 passengers, while 19 others also perished on the ground.

Probe marks one year

“Over the past year, the investigation team has undertaken an extensive and rigorous examination of all relevant technical, operational, organisational and human factors associated with the accident. This effort has been supported by accredited representatives, technical advisers and subject matter experts from relevant organisations,” stated the AAIB in a release.

“Significant progress has been made in the examination and analysis of aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine-related components, maintenance and operational records, and other evidence relevant to the investigation,” it added.

Analysis of key evidence

Elaborating further, the AAIB stated that the evidence gathered and the results of various examinations are currently being analysed in a comprehensive and integrated manner.

It also said that additional technical evaluations and specialist examinations, wherever considered necessary, will continue to be undertaken to ensure that all findings and conclusions are supported by verified evidence and sound scientific analysis.

“The sole purpose of an accident investigation is to enhance aviation safety through the identification of lessons and safety recommendations, and not to apportion blame or liability. Accordingly, AAIB urges all stakeholders, including the media and the public, to refrain from speculation or premature conclusions while the investigation remains in progress,” it added.

Final report yet to come

As to when the final report on the crash will be released, the AAIB stated that it would be done following the conclusion of the thorough and objective probe.

“The AAIB remains firmly committed to conducting a thorough, independent, objective and evidence-based investigation. The Final Report will be released upon completion of all investigative activities and the requisite international review and consultation processes prescribed under ICAO Annex 13.” It added.

Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick, crashed shortly after departure on June 12, 2025. Of the passengers on board, one survived the accident.

What preliminary findings showed

In its preliminary report released in July 2025, the AAIB stated that both engine fuel control switches had transitioned from the “RUN” position to “CUTOFF” moments after take-off, resulting in an interruption of fuel supply to the engines.

The report, however, did not identify the reason for the movement of the switches. It also did not attribute responsibility for the accident to any individual or entity.
