Lack of consensus
Sood’s extension in the post has come due to the lack of consensus over the choice of his possible successor among the members of the high-level committee tasked with picking the new CBI chief – PM Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and the Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
At the meeting of the committee at the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi on Monday (May 5), sources said a number of names were discussed but the government pushed for a one-year extension for Sood. Rahul Gandhi is believed to have been against Sood’s tenure being extended.
