DY Patil, former Bengal Governor and education pioneer, dies at 92
A veteran Congress leader-turned-educationist, Patil transformed higher education in Maharashtra through universities, hospitals and the iconic DY Patil Stadium
Former West Bengal Governor, veteran politician and renowned educationist Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil passed away after a prolonged illness at his residence in Maharashtra's Kolhapur on Tuesday (August 4). He was 92.
Patil, who spent decades in public life before emerging as one of India's most influential educationists, is survived by his sons - former Maharashtra minister and Congress leader Satej Patil, Sanjay Patil and Ajinkya Patil.
Political career
Hailing from Kolhapur, Patil began his political career with the Congress and served as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1978. Though he remained associated with the Congress for most of his political life, he formally joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in December 2018.
DY Patil’s legacy
His most enduring legacy, however, lies in the field of education. Patil founded the DY Patil Group, which grew into one of the country's largest private educational networks, establishing more than 182 educational institutions, international schools and seven deemed universities across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur. The institutions offer courses in medicine, engineering, management, dentistry and several other disciplines, educating thousands of students every year.

Beyond education, Patil also played a key role in developing healthcare infrastructure through hospitals and medical colleges under the DY Patil banner. He was also the visionary behind the internationally acclaimed DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, which has hosted international cricket matches, the IPL and other major sporting events.
Public life
Patil also held several constitutional positions during his public life. He served as the Governor of Tripura and Bihar, and also held additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal. During his tenure as governor, he was regarded as a seasoned administrator with experience spanning politics, education and public service.

In recognition of his contribution to education and social welfare, the Union Government conferred the Padma Shri on him in 1991.
