Operation Sindoor | Defence Budget to get Rs 50,000 crore boost: Reports

In February, a record of over Rs 6.81 lakh crore was allocated in Union Budget 2025-26 for the Ministry of Defence, an increase of 9.53 per cent


As a result of Operation Sindoor, the Union government may get an additional Rs 50,000 crore for defence Budget and is likely to get the nod in the Winter session of Parliament later this year, reports said on Friday (May 16).

Following a terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22 in which 26 tourists were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor on the intervening night of May 7 and May 8, destroying nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Over 100 terrorists killed

According to the Indian Army, over 100 terrorists were killed in Operation Sindoor.

On May 10, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire after the militaries of both countries attacked each other’s military facilities, as the conflict escalated.

The ceasefire has been extended till May 18. “Further to the understanding between the two DGMOs on 10th of May 2025, it has been decided to continue the confidence-building measures so as to reduce the alertness level. As the situation develops further, we shall intimate you,” the Indian Army said in a statement on Thursday.

Over Rs 6.81 lakh crore allocated

Now, reports, citing sources, have said that the Defence Budget is set to receive a Rs 50,000 crore boost.

“The boost, which will likely be provided through the supplementary budget, will take overall defence allocation past Rs 7 lakh crore,” an NDTV report said, quoting a source.

In the report, sources added that the increased Budget approval will be sought in Parliament's Winter Session. It will likely be used for research and development, and the purchase of weapons, ammunition, and other necessary equipment.

“In pursuance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi-led Government’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’ with technologically-advanced and ‘Aatmanirbhar’ Armed Forces, Union Budget of India has made a provision of Rs 6,81,210.27 crore for Financial Year (FY) 2025-26 for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This allocation is 9.53% more than the Budgetary Estimate of FY 2024-25 and stands at 13.45% of Union Budget, which is highest among the Ministries,” the Ministry of Defence had said.
