Security stepped up in Delhi; internet suspended
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up at the borders connecting Noida with Delhi, with police personnel and Border Security Force (BSF) jawans deployed at key points ahead of a major protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital on Saturday (October 10). The protest has been called to demand the resignation of CEC Kumar amid allegations of irregularities in election-related processes.

Internet services will be suspended within a 4-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar from 10 pm on October 9 to 10 pm on October 10. The suspension will apply to all mobile internet services. Internet services in the rest of Delhi will remain unaffected.
At the Chilla border, personnel from the Noida and Delhi police, along with BSF jawans, have been deployed as part of heightened security arrangements.
Police teams have begun checking suspicious vehicles and questioning people as needed, officials said.
Security personnel are keeping a close watch on buses, taxis and private cars entering Delhi from Noida. Police are stopping vehicles for checks as part of efforts to prevent any untoward incident during the protest.
Security personnel have also placed reinforced concrete (RCC) barriers at the border to strengthen security. Police might seal the border around 9 pm on Friday, though an official confirmation of the proposed measure was not immediately available. Several social organisations, members of farmers' unions and leaders of some political parties in Noida have alleged that police have placed them under house arrest ahead of the protest.
SC slams Centre on Metro curbs
Supreme Court on Friday questioned the Centre over unprecedented curbs announced in the national capital ahead of the planned protest by the CJP on Saturday. It was particularly critical of the closure of Metro rail services planned to prevent the arrival of protesters.
"Young people, elderly all travel. Commuters have a right to basic facilities," the court told the Centre's lawyer, asking for the number of closed Metro stations to be brought down. The court made these observations while hearing a petition against closures of metro stations and cancellation of trains by CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby.
Earlier, Delhi Police denied permission for the CJP to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar over the accountability of CEC Kumar, citing short notice and previous violations of police directions.

Security checks at Noida-Delhi borders ahead of CJP protest; BSF deployed
Security has been stepped up at the borders connecting Noida with Delhi, with police personnel and Border Security Force (BSF) jawans deployed at key points ahead of a major protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital on Saturday.
The protest has been called to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar amid allegations of irregularities in election-related processes.
At the Chilla border, personnel from the Noida and Delhi police, along with BSF jawans, have been deployed as part of heightened security arrangements.
Police teams have begun checking vehicles considered suspicious and questioning people wherever necessary, officials said.
Security personnel are keeping a close watch on buses, taxis and private cars entering Delhi from Noida. Vehicles are being stopped for checks as part of efforts to prevent any untoward incident during the protest.
Reinforced concrete (RCC) barriers have also been placed at the border to strengthen security.
Sources suggested that police could move to seal the border around 9 pm on Friday, though an official confirmation of the proposed measure was not immediately available.
Several social organisations, members of farmers' unions and leaders of some political parties in Noida have alleged that police have placed them under house arrest ahead of the protest.
"I have security personnel from police and other forces at my home and around it and I am not allowed to go out. My associates who are farmers rights activists also informed me about a similar situation with them. I wish to participate in the protest in Delhi tomorrow along with fellow farmers," Sukhveer Khalifa, president of Bhartiya Kisan Parishad, an influential farmers' body in Noida, told news agency PTI.
There was no official response from authorities to these allegations. Phone calls to senior officials remained unanswered.
Meanwhile, the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has said its services will operate as usual on Saturday, following the regular weekend timetable.
"There will be no change in Noida Metro operations. Passenger services will continue on Saturday as per the usual Saturday schedule," an NMRC spokesperson told the news agency on Friday.
The clarification comes after directions were issued to keep several Delhi Metro stations closed during the protest in the national capital. Delhi Metro's network expands into Noida also with several stations here, prompting concerns over possible disruptions to connectivity.
The NMRC operates services between Noida and Greater Noida, and its metro line does not enter Delhi's territorial limits.

Supreme Court asks Centre to reconsider Delhi Metro, train curbs
The Supreme Court has directed authorities to reconsider restrictions on metro and railway services in Delhi ahead of the October 10 protests, saying a complete shutdown could cause unnecessary hardship to commuters.
The Centre agreed to allow services to operate under suitable regulation, keeping public convenience and the principle of proportionality in mind.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, dictating the order, said the court’s concern was the blanket stoppage of transport services, as no protest organiser had filed a petition before it. The bench said the issue was whether the restrictions went beyond what was needed to manage the planned demonstrations.
“Stopping something and regulating are two different concepts. One can regulate but it is completely different to put a halt on everything…you cannot stop everything,” the bench observed as quoted by the Bar and Bench.
The court also said the authorities must reconsider the closure of metro stations and restrictions on trains reaching New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Delhi Police, agreed to urge the authorities to permit regulated movement.
The bench directed officials to publicise their revised decision widely so commuters could plan their journeys. It clarified that its order concerned transport restrictions, not the protest itself.
The court said the aim should be to avoid inconvenience to Delhi residents while allowing authorities to maintain public order. It also asked officials to review road barricades and consider alternative routes where needed.
