Delhi protests LIVE | CJP’s Abhijeet Dipke gets bail, asked to sign a bond

The CJP founder was released after furnishing a peace bond, while Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka remain in judicial custody

Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke was on Saturday (October 17) granted conditional bail after he was produced before Special Executive Magistrate court in Delhi. He was detained near his residence on Friday while on his way to join the party’s ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest at Central Park in Connaught Place.

Dipke was released after furnishing a peace bond. CJP activists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, meanwhile, remain in judicial custody after allegedly attempting to enter the Jantar Mantar area.

Delhi Police arrested Dipke in a fresh breach-of-peace case under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora was also taken into preventive custody during the CJP’s ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march at Connaught Place on Friday.

Bora was released early on Saturday after completing the formalities for her detention under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. Dipke, however, continued to remain in custody and was taken before the SEM court.

On October 10, Dipke had signed a bond undertaking to maintain peace for one year after Delhi Police detained him aboard a flight at Delhi airport. A separate breach-of-peace case was registered against him on that occasion.

Following her release, Bora slammed Delhi Police and the BJP-led government at the Centre, describing the detentions as “illegal”. She also demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise be scrapped and called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.

Why are women detained even after sunset? asks AISA national president Neha Bora

"Law and order are being flouted in every possible way. Ordinary citizens are treated as if they were hardened criminals, a practice that has persisted in this country for a long time. The current movement has clearly exposed how people are being detained, whether during the day or in the evening, held in custody throughout the night, and only released the following morning or evening. Under what authority is this justified? By what law or order is it permissible to keep detainees held in custody all night long? Legally, individuals, especially women, ought to be released after sunset, yet this is not happening. Furthermore, there is a new narrative being pushed, one of chaos and anarchy. What kind of chaos and anarchy? The one you unleashed in Central Delhi? The people of Delhi cannot even breathe a sigh of relief; whichever route they take to get to work, they find it blocked. You are spreading chaos and anarchy across the nation. Please, spare the people of India. Impeach Gyanesh Kumar and halt SIR, so that the ordinary citizens of this country can breathe a sigh of relief, feel at ease, and have their voting rights ensured." ANI

    CJP worried about Dipke's whereabouts

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) late Friday said the whereabouts of its founder Abhijeet Dipke remained unknown after his detention by Delhi Police.

The CJP alleged that Dipke had been taken to an undisclosed location and it had lost contact with him. "The Delhi Police has taken Abhijeet Dipke to an undisclosed location. We have lost contact with him. He is not being allowed to talk to lawyers," the CJP said in a post on X.

"Why does this government treat youth like terrorists? We are equal citizens of India and we deserve all the protections and rights of the Constitution!" it said.

"Abhijeet was just walking out of his home with a Tiranga in his hand! How can walking with a tiranga be a crime?" the CJP asked, adding that detentions would not deter people from joining the protests.

The CJP also wrote to Delhi Police inquiring about Dipke's whereabouts.

In a letter addressed to Mandir Marg station house officer, CJP leader Rohan Deshpande said, "Since his detention, we have received no information regarding his present location or the police station or facility where he is being held. This lack of information is deeply concerning."

He urged Delhi Police to immediately confirm Dipke's present whereabouts, the legal provisions invoked and the grounds communicated for his preventive detention.
