Rupee falls 22 paise after India-US trade rally
The rupee depreciated 22 paise to 90.54 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday (February 4), following a sharp rally after India and the US agreed to a trade deal on suspected dollar buying by corporates and importers.
Forex traders said despite the positive sentiment post the India-US trade deal, caution still remains as there is no signed or officially released trade agreement yet — no framework text or final documentation.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 90.35 against the US dollar, then lost ground and fell to 90.54, registering a loss of 22 paise over its previous close.
On Tuesday, the Indian rupee emerged as the best-performing Asian currency, registering a record gain of 117 paise or 1.28 per cent in a single trading session to settle at 90.32 against the US dollar, after India and the US agreed to a trade deal.

IT stocks tumble over Anthropic's new AI automation tool
IT stocks tumble in Wednesday (February 4) morning trade after Anthropic launches a new AI automation tool that has set off what analysts are calling a "SaaSpocalypse". The new tool has rattled global technology markets and putting Indian IT stocks such as Infosys, Wipro and TCS in sharp focus.
Anthropic has recently rolled out 11 new plug-ins for its Claude Cowork agent, an agentic, no-code AI assistant built for enterprise use. The move expands automation across legal, sales, marketing and data analysis, heightening concerns about disruption in the software ecosystem.
Beyond legal workflows, Claude agents can now directly perform tasks that previously required interfaces from platforms such as Salesforce or ServiceNow.
Experts are concerned that artificial intelligence could replace core software and outsourcing business models. This triggered a steep overnight sell-off in US software shares, with ripple effects across Europe and Asia.

India committed to no longer purchasing Russian oil, $500 billion of investments into US: White House
The White House has hailed a new trade agreement with India, saying the country has committed to “no longer” purchasing Russian oil, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also agreeing on investments of USD 500 billion across key American sectors.
These remarks were made by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday.
"The President struck another great trade deal with India. He spoke with Prime Minister Modi directly. They share a very good relationship. India is committed to not only no longer purchasing Russian oil, but buying oil from the United States, also perhaps from Venezuela too, which we know will now have a direct benefit on the United States and the American people,” Leavitt told reporters Tuesday.
She further said that in addition to that, Prime Minister Modi “committed to $500 billion of investments into the United States, including for transportation, for energy and for agricultural products as well. So this is another great trade deal thanks to President Trump.” Earlier, speaking to Fox News about the India-US trade deal, Leavitt said the two leaders had a “great call” on Monday, following which the bilateral trade deal was announced.
“...when it comes to Prime Minister Modi, I know he (Trump) particularly enjoys their relationship and has a deep respect for the Prime Minister and for his country of India.
“They had a great call. It was very productive yesterday, and they struck a deal in which India has agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil to buy more American oil from the United States of America, and potentially from Venezuela too,” she said.

Palestinians wait at Gaza-Egypt border as uncertainty clouds reopening of Rafah crossing
Palestinians gathered on both sides of Gaza's border with Egypt on Tuesday hoping to pass through the Rafah crossing, after its reopening the previous day was marred by delays, interrogations and uncertainty over who would be allowed to cross.
On the Egyptian side were Palestinians who fled Gaza earlier in the Israel-Hamas war to seek medical treatment, according to Egypt's state-run Al-Qahera News television.
On the Gaza side, Palestinians in need of medical care that is unavailable in Gaza gathered at a hospital before ambulances moved toward Rafah, hoping for word that they would be allowed to cross the other way.
The office of the North Sinai governor confirmed Tuesday that an unknown number of patients and their companions had crossed from Gaza into Egypt.
The bus with about 40 Palestinians that entered Gaza via Rafah on Tuesday arrived at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis early Wednesday morning, where their families welcomed them after spending the entire day waiting.
