Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Kumar Deka gets one-year extension

Deka was initially appointed as IB chief in 2022 for a two-year period, and was given a one-year extension in June 2024


Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Tapan Kumar Deka was on Tuesday (May 20) given a one-year extension till June 2026, according to a Personnel Ministry order.

Deka is a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Deka as the Director, Intelligence Bureau, for a period of one year beyond June 30, 2025, the order said.

The govt order

The government order reads, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Shri Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:88) as Director, Intelligence Bureau for a period of one year beyond 30.06.2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.”

Tapan Kumar Deka was initially appointed as IB chief in 2022 for a two-year period, and was given a one-year extension in June 2024. He joined the Intelligence Bureau in 1998.
