    What Trump said at WEF

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump said that only US can protect Greenland.

Many European nations have also acquired territories, and there is nothing wrong with it, Trump added.

In an overflowing hall, he started his speech by greeting 'so many friends' present and 'a few enemies', and lashed out heavily at Europe, NATO, proponents of clean energy and past US presidents, including "sleepy" Joe Biden.

"We were powerful force when we saved Greenland and gave it to Denmark after World War II, but we are much more powerful now," he said.

On Canada, Trump said, "Canada gets a lot of freebies from us; they should be grateful."

He also repeated his claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan, as he did with so many other wars.

Karnataka Guv refuses to address joint session of legislature

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has refused to address the joint sitting of the state legislature on January 22, official sources said on Wednesday (January 21).

A high-level delegation led by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil is set to meet the Governor at Lok Bhavan in this regard.

"In the wake of the Governor's refusal to address the joint session tomorrow, a high-level delegation led by the Law Minister will leave for Raj Bhavan (Lok Bhavan) at 5.45 pm today," the Law Minister's office said in a statement.

The grounds for the Governor's refusal is still not clear.

The joint session of Karnataka legislature that will begin on Thursday is expected to be stormy, with confrontation expected between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP- JD (S) combine on a host of issues including the "repeal" of MGNREGA by the Centre.

The session from January 22 to 31 will begin with Governor Gehlot's customary address to the joint sitting of legislature on Thursday.

Confrontation is expected between the treasury and opposition benches as the ruling Congress is planning to pass a resolution against the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for repealing the UPA era Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), and demand for its restoration by scrapping the new Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act.

The state government's move coincides with the Congress' nationwide campaign "Save MGNREGA".

The Karnataka cabinet has decided not to accept the recently enacted VB-G RAM G Act, replacing the MGNREGA, and to take up a legal battle against it.

Zomato's Deepinder Goyal to step down

Food delivery and quick commerce firm Eternal, which owns the Zomato and Blinkit brands, on Wednesday reported 72.88 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 102 crore for December quarter FY26.

In the year-ago period, the company logged a profit of Rs 59 crore.

The company's board also approved the resignation of Deepinder Goyal as Director, MD & CEO of the company, with effect from February 1 and recommended his appointment as Vice Chairman & Director on the board for a five-year term, effective upon shareholders' approval.

The board approved the appointment of Albinder Singh Dhindsa, currently Blinkit's CEO, as Eternal's Chief Executive Officer from February 1, a regulatory filing said.

During the third quarter, Eternal's revenue from operations increased to Rs 16,315 crore from Rs 5,405 crore in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

However, total expenses also shot up to Rs 16,493 crore in the quarter from Rs 5,533 crore a year ago.

In a letter to shareholders, Goyal explained the reason behind his stepping down from the role of Group CEO.

"Of late, I have found myself drawn to a set of new ideas that involve significantly higher-risk exploration and experimentation. These are the kinds of ideas that are better pursued outside a public company like Eternal. If these ideas belonged inside Eternal's strategic scope, I would have pursued them within the company. They do not. Eternal deserves to remain focused, and disciplined, while exploring new areas of growth that are relevant to its current line of business," Goyal stated.

He further said the transition allows Eternal to remain sharply focused, while giving him the space to explore ideas that do not fit Eternal's risk profile.

Israel's Netanyahu agrees to join Trump's Board of Peace

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said Wednesday he had agreed to join U.S. President Donald Trump's Board of Peace, after his office earlier criticized makeup of the board's executive committee. The committee included Turkey, a regional rival.

A statement from Netanyahu's office said he had accepted Trump's invitation.

The Board of Peace led by Trump was originally envisioned as a small group of world leaders overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan. The Trump administration's ambitions have ballooned into a more sprawling concept, with Trump extending invitations to dozens of nations and hinting it will soon broker global conflicts, like a pseudo-U.N. Security Council.

More details were expected when Trump participates in an announcement about the Board of Peace on Thursday at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
