Rahul Mamkootathil heckled at Kerala hospital after third rape arrest; Cong disowns MLA
Expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who was arrested in connection with a sexual assault case, was heckled and activists of DYFI and Yuva Morcha raised slogans against him, at a government hospital on Sunday (January 11) when he was taken there for medical examination by the police. The court has remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
Prior to being presented in court, the Palakkad legislator was taken to the hospital after being questioned for several hours at a police camp in the district.

Israel on ‘high alert’ as Trump weighs military options amid Iran protests
Hours after US President Donald Trump signalled a possible course of action on Iran as the country grapples with its most widespread anti-government protests in years, Israel was reportedly placed on heightened alert amid the prospect of potential US involvement.
According to Reuters, citing three people who attended Israeli security meetings over the weekend, Israel is preparing for possible US action in Iran, where violent protests have left more than 100 people dead. During a phone conversation on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke about the possibility of American intervention in Iran, the source told the news agency.
Earlier, The New York Times reported that Trump has been briefed on new military options against Iran as protests intensify within the country and spill onto streets abroad.

PM Modi leads ‘Shaurya Yatra’ at Somnath Swabhiman Parv in Gujarat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday led 'Shaurya Yatra', a ceremonial procession organised to honour those who laid down their lives defending the Somnath temple in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district.
He also offered prayers at the historic temple and paid tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose statue has been installed near the temple premises.
The 'Shaurya Yatra', being organised as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, featured a procession of 108 horses, reflecting valour and sacrifice.
A large number of people and devotees gathered on both sides of the yatra route from Shankh Circle to Veer Hamirji Gohil Circle to greet the prime minister.
Standing on a specially designed vehicle, PM Modi, accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, waved at the crowd during the one-km-long yatra.

Grok obscenity row: X blocks 3,500 posts, deletes 600 accounts after Centre flags content
Social media platform X has blocked 3,500 posts and removed 600 accounts after the Centre flagged obscene content on the platform, government sources said. The sources added that X has assured the government it will not permit obscene material on its platform and will comply with all government regulations.
The development comes a week after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology flagged obscene content on X, formerly Twitter. The ministry had sought an action-taken report from X Corp, led by billionaire Elon Musk, within 72 hours, calling for “immediate compliance for the prevention of hosting, generation, publication or transmission, sharing or uploading of obscene, nude, indecent and explicit content through the misuse of AI-based services such as ‘Grok’ and xAI’s other services”.
The Centre’s directive warned that any failure to comply would be “viewed seriously” and could invite strict legal action against the platform and concerned officials under Indian laws.

US launches fresh strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria after deadly Palmyra attack
The US has carried out fresh strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria in response to last month’s attack that killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter.
The large-scale strikes, conducted by the US alongside partner forces, occurred around 12:30 pm ET, according to US Central Command. The strikes hit multiple Islamic State targets across Syria.
As per news agency AP, Saturday's strikes are part of a broader operation that is part of President Donald Trump's response to the deadly ISIS attack that killed Sgt Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt William Nathaniel Howard, and Ayad Mansoor Sakat, the civilian interpreter, in Palmyra last month.
“Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” US Central Command said in a statement on Saturday.

Amaravati development ‘unstoppable’, says Chandrababu Naidu amid political row
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said that some people are “jealous” of the pace at which Amaravati is being built, and are dreaming of stalling the greenfield capital city’s development, which is “unstoppable”.
Addressing an event at a private college in Vijayawada, the chief minister said that Amaravati will be constructed in a manner that will earn the world's appreciation.
“We are going to build an Amaravati, which the world will appreciate. Some are jealous of its construction speed and are dreaming of stalling it… But it is unstoppable,” Naidu said.
Naidu’s remarks came in the wake of former chief minister and YSRCP supremo Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy accusing him of taking up a capital city project in a river basin.
Hinting at Reddy, Naidu asked where cities like Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi and London are located.

Uttarakhand police file FIR to identify ‘VIPs’ in Ankita Bhandari murder case
Uttarakhand Police on Saturday filed an FIR to identify alleged 'VIPs' in connection with the Ankita Bhandari murder case, officials said. The development came a day after the state government recommended a CBI probe into the matter.
The FIR was lodged at the Vasant Vihar police station in Dehradun on a complaint filed by Padma Bhushan-awarded environmentalist Anil Prakash Joshi to the director general of police.
Joshi, in the complaint, has stated that the criminals involved in Ankita's murder have been convicted, but allegations are being made that evidence has been concealed or destroyed.
An investigation into the crime involving an unidentified person, described as a "VIP," is necessary to ensure complete justice, he added.
Based on the complaint, the police registered an FIR under sections 238, 249 and 45 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that the FIR should have been filed by Ankita's parents.

Six killed in Mississippi rampage, suspect charged with murder
A 24-year-old Mississippi man killed six people — his father, brother, uncle, 7-year-old cousin, a church pastor and the pastor's brother — at three locations during a rampage in a rural area, authorities said.
Daricka M Moore was arrested at a police roadblock in Cedarbluff just before midnight on Friday after dozens of local, state and federal officers flooded the northeast Mississippi area.
Moore was being held without bail Saturday at the Clay County jail in West Point on murder charges and ahead of an expected initial appearance Monday before a judge.
Clay County District Attorney Scott Colom, who said he expects to pursue the death penalty, told The Associated Press that Moore would likely be appointed a public defender at that time.
If charges are upgraded to capital murder before then, Moore will be ineligible for bail under state law.

US protests: Thousands march in Minneapolis over fatal ICE shooting
Thousands of people have marched in Minneapolis to protest the fatal shooting of a woman by a federal immigration officer there and the shooting of two protesters in Portland, Oregon, as Minnesota leaders urged demonstrators to remain peaceful.
The Minneapolis gathering on Saturday (January 9) was one of hundreds of protests planned in towns and cities across the country over the weekend. It came in a city on edge since the killing of Renee Good on Wednesday by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.
“We're all living in fear right now,” said Meghan Moore, a mother of two from Minneapolis who joined the protest Saturday. “ICE is creating an environment where nobody feels safe and that's unacceptable.” On Friday night, a protest outside a Minneapolis hotel that attracted about 1,000 people turned violent as demonstrators threw ice, snow and rocks at officers, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said Saturday.
