Yemen's Houthis claim responsibility for attack on Israel, first since Iran war

The Iranian-backed Houthis have claimed responsibility for the missile attack on Israel, which calls into question whether the rebel group backed by Tehran will again target commercial shipping travelling through the Red Sea corridor.

Sirens went off around Beer Sheba and the area near Israel’s main nuclear research centre for the third time overnight Friday into Saturday as Iran and Hezbollah continued to fire on Israel overnight.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, a military spokesman for the Houthis, issued the claim in a statement on the rebels’ Al-Masirah satellite television on Saturday.

Saree said they fired a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting what he described as “sensitive Israeli military sites” in southern Israel. The attack came hours after Saree signalled in a vague statement on Friday that the rebels would join the war that shocked the region and rattled the global economy.

Missile launched from Yemen, says Israel

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said it had identified a missile launched from Yemen toward Israeli territory — the first fired from Yemen since the war began, according to Reuters and Agence France-Presse.

"Aerial defence systems are operating to intercept the threat," the IDF wrote on Telegram, according to a BBC report. Within 15 minutes, it announced the all-clear, saying it was safe for people to leave protective spaces.

The launch follows a warning from a Houthi spokesperson that the Iran-backed group would enter the conflict if attacks on Iran continued.

In a statement, Yahya Saree, the spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces – the Houthi faction of Yemen's military – says "their fingers are on the trigger for direct military intervention".

Iranian attack on Saudi base injures at least 10 US troops, damages several planes

An Iranian missile attack on Friday (March 27) left at least 10 American service members wounded and damaged several planes at a military base in Saudi Arabia, according to two US officials familiar with the situation. Two of the troops were seriously wounded, one of the officials said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity.

The attack on Prince Sultan Air Base damaged several US refuelling aircraft, said the officials. Satellite imagery that appeared to show the damage to the aircraft was posted online. The attack, which involved an Iranian missile as well as unmanned drones, comes a day after President Donald Trump said Iran has been “obliterated” and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said that “never in recorded history has a nation's military been so quickly and so effectively neutralized”.

US Central Command said earlier on Friday that more than 300 service members have been wounded in the month-long conflict. While most of the wounded have recovered and returned to duty, 30 remain out of action and 10 are considered seriously wounded.

This is not the first time that Prince Sultan Air Base has been targeted by Iran. Army Sgt Benjamin N Pennington, 26, was wounded during a March 1 attack on the base and died days later. He is one of the 13 service members who have been killed in the war. The attack was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal.

    Israel hits Iran's nuclear plants

Israel struck Iran's nuclear facilities hours after threatening to “escalate and expand” its campaign against Tehran on Friday. Iran vowed to retaliate and struck a base in Saudi Arabia, wounding US service members and damaging planes.

A month into the war, however, there appeared to be a breakthrough as Tehran agreed to allow humanitarian aid and agricultural shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, accepting a request from the UN.

Ali Bahreini, the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, said Iran agreed to “facilitate and expedite” such movement, even as it endures strikes on its nuclear facilities.

The vital waterway usually handles a fifth of the world's oil shipments and nearly a third of the world's fertilizer trade. While markets and governments have largely focused on blocked supplies of oil and natural gas, the restriction of fertilizer ingredients and trade threatens farming and food security around the world.

“This measure reflects Iran's continued commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and ensuring that essential aid reaches those in need without delay,” Bahreini said on the social platform X. The UN earlier announced a task force to address the ripple effects the Iran war has had on aid delivery.

Trump-Modi has had a productive discussion, says White House

US President Donald Trump had a productive conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the White House has said, referring to the talks between the two leaders on Tuesday.

The New York Times reported that billionaire businessman Elon Musk joined the phone call between Modi and Trump on Tuesday when the two leaders discussed the situation in West Asia.

“President Trump has a great relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and this was a productive conversation,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to PTI when asked for comment on the report.

Elon Musk participated in a phone call on Tuesday with President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, an unusual appearance by a private citizen on a call between two heads of state during a wartime crisis, The New York Times reported quoting unnamed US officials.

The New York Times report said the inclusion of Musk, confirmed by two US officials, suggests that the world's richest man is back on better terms with the president.

Trump and Musk had a falling out last year following the billionaire's departure from the government, where he had been tasked with slashing the work force.

The report said it is unclear why Musk was on the call or whether he spoke. It was the first conversation between the two leaders since the West Asia conflict began on February 28.

During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible, noting that it is vital for global peace, stability and economic well-being

Saudi, Israel must normalise ties, says Trump

US President Donald Trump has said that it will be time for Saudi Arabia and Israel to normalise ties after the war in Iran wraps up.

“It's now time,” Trump said at a Miami event sponsored by a Saudi sovereign wealth fund. “We've now taken them out, and they are out bigly. We got to get into the Abraham Accords.” Trump has been pressing Israel and Saudi Arabia, the two biggest powers in the Middle East, for years to normalise ties as part of his Abraham Accords efforts.

Will the war end in weeks? US says so

The US expects its campaign against Iran to wrap up within weeks, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said late Friday (March 27), even as violence across the region persists and Israel threatens to intensify its attacks on the Islamic Republic.

"When we are done with them in the next couple of weeks, they will be weaker than they've been in recent history," Rubio told reporters after meeting G7 foreign ministers in France.

Iran, meanwhile, remains defiant, flatly denying Donald Trump's claim that negotiations are "going well" and insisting no talks are underway.
