Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s continued absence from Parliament proceedings sparked fresh chaos in the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 10), as Opposition parties intensified their demand for a statement from him on allegations of police excess against student protesters in Delhi and the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
The uproar once again brought proceedings to a standstill and led the Lower House to be adjourned till 2 pm. Rajya Sabha also got adjourned till 2 pm amid Opposition ruckus.
After the House reconvened, Opposition MPs continued to protest in Lok Sabha, demanding Shah's immediate presence in the Lok Sabha. Amid the din, Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moves Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026, for consideration of the House.
Later, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.
Rijiju hits out at Opposition
Amid the disruptions, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, while talking to reporters, hit out at the Opposition, saying that Shah will reply to debate on students' agitation, but the Opposition will have to listen peacefully.
Rijiju says the only condition from the government side is that the Opposition must assure it will not disrupt when Shah is speaking.
He also added that the government is ready for discussion in Lok Sabha on student protests in different parts of the country.
“Opposition first takes part in debate and then runs away from House without listening to reply; this is not acceptable, they have to listen,” he added.
"Government is ready to have a full and detailed discussion on student movements and activities related to that. While the reply is being made, they (Opposition) should not create any disturbance to prevent the statement of the Home Minister," Rijiju said.
"From Day 1 Congress party and Rahul Gandhi have been demanding a statement from the Home Minister. I want to inform the House that the government and the Home Minister are ready not just for a statement but for a detailed discussion and a statement from the Home Minister," he said.
With only four days of the Monsoon session remaining, the fate of major Bills on women's reservation, delimitation and the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) remains uncertain amid the ongoing logjam in Parliament. None of these bills figured in the list of business for the Lok Sabha for Monday.
Parliament disruptions continue
Despite the disruptions, legislative business moved ahead. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, while Minister of State for Cooperatives Muralidhar Mahor tabled the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and G. Kishan Reddy also introduced the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026, and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Opposition escalates protest
Outside Parliament also, the Opposition upped the ante against the government. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and other Opposition MPs gathered near Makar Dwar to stage a protest against the government.
Carrying placards and raising slogans, they demanded answers from Shah over the student crackdown. Among the slogans heard at the demonstration were “chhanda chor, gaddi chor”, “Amit Shah jawaab do” and “chanda chor kahan milenge, BJP ke daftar mein”.

Protesters also placed a donation box at the site to symbolise the alleged theft of contributions made at the Ram temple.
"I think the deadlock in Parliament will continue till the Union Home Minister gives a statement," Priyanka Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament House complex.
Leaders of the INDIA bloc met earlier in the day and resolved to keep pressure on the government over what they describe as “police excesses” against students and the alleged donation theft. The alliance has made clear that both issues will remain at the centre of its parliamentary strategy.
Earlier in the day, Congress MP KC Venugopal wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urging him to direct Shah to make a statement on the floor of the House regarding the July 20 police crackdown in New Delhi.
Rahul targets Centre
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, in an article published in The Hindu, accused the Centre of failing young people who participated in the July 20 protests over the paper-leak issue.
"On July 20, 2026, India's young people came together to demand a fair education system and accountability for paper leaks. These young women and men came from every caste, class, region and religion,” stated Rahul.

NCP (SP) rules out support to NDA, says delimitation stance depends on Bill
The Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) on Monday dismissed speculation about future support for the BJP-led NDA, and affirmed that its stance on delimitation will depend on the final draft bill presented in Parliament.
Talking to reporters, NCP (SP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said a delegation led by party MP and working president Supriya Sule met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss issues related to Maharashtra, and insisted the visit wasn't political.
He said the meeting, which lasted 20 minutes, was scheduled after confirmation from the Prime Minister's Office on Friday and was not related to the delimitation issue.
"There is no proposal or discussion on delimitation in Parliament today. First, the bill should come. Once the bill comes, it will be discussed with the INDIA alliance. There will be a detailed discussion within the alliance," Tapase said.
He clarified that the NCP (SP) was firmly with the Opposition bloc and had not entered into any political understanding with the BJP or the NDA in 2014, 2019 or 2024, and questioned why it would do so now.
Tapase's remarks came amid speculation about a rapprochement between the two NCP factions and the Sharad Pawar-led party extending support to the NDA.
He said that the party had built its own organisation after the NCP split and was working to strengthen its cadre under the leadership of Supriya Sule, Rohit Pawar, Jayant Patil and Shashikant Shinde.
Speaking about the proposed delimitation exercise, Tapase said the government had not yet made up its mind whether to introduce the legislation during the ongoing monsoon session.
"No draft bill has been sent to any MP for reading or discussion. I don't think the delimitation bill will come in the next two-three days," he said.

"Amit Shah lacks the courage to come to Parliament and stand for what he has done. The Opposition and the country are not interested in what Amit Shah thinks of the education system or the protests.
