LIVE: All Congress leaders, CJP protesters released from detention; Wangchuk shifted to Medanta

Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday (July 21) wrote a letter to DCP, New Delhi, seeking immediate release of the lists of FIRs and detained protesters following the Cockroach Janta Party protest.

Kejriwal also visited the Parliament Street police station and reiterated the demands before Delhi Police.

"I am given to understand that a number of FIRs have been registered against the people who were protesting at Jantar Mantar yesterday demanding accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi about failures in the education system," Kejrwal said in his letter to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) New Delhi Sachin Sharma. "I am also given to understand that a number of people have been held in custody after the protest without any registration of FIRs," he added.

Kejriwal demanded that the lists of FIRs and detained protestors be made public immediately so that legal assistance could be provided to those affected.

"We have received two complaints on the helpline number since its launch, and we have given the details to the police. One student is missing, the parents are looking for him," he told reporters outside the police station. Earlier in the day, AAP had launched a helpline number to provide medical aid to injured protesters and legal assistance to the families of detained students.

The Delhi Police detained Congress leaders protesting at Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday (July 21) as they marched towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence, demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET controversy.

Senior Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal and Pawan Khera, participated in the protest.

Reacting to the detentions, Punjab Congress Campaign Committee Chairperson Charanjit Singh Channi accused the BJP-led government of suppressing dissent and alleged that it was refusing to address students' concerns.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, accompanied by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, protested outside the Prime Minister's Lok Kalyan Marg residence on Tuesday (July 21), demanding the resignation of PM Narendra Modi over the police action against students protesting on the NEET paper leak issue.

The two leaders were joined in the dharna by several party MPs and leaders, who raised slogans against the prime minister.

The Congress leaders earlier marched to the prime minister's residence against what they alleged were "police brutalities" on the young students during the CJP-led protest march to Parliament on Monday.

"We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability, nor does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament," Gandhi said in a post on X.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (July 21) directed the Medical Director of Medanta Hospital to constitute a dedicated team of doctors to continuously monitor climate activist Sonam Wangchuk following his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital.

In its order permitting the transfer, the court directed Medanta's medical team to strictly follow the prescribed treatment protocol and said Wangchuk must comply with the advice and recommendations of the doctors throughout his treatment.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi met students admitted at the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital after being injured in police action during the CJP-led protest march to Parliament over the NEET paper leak issue, and expressed solidarity with them.

They also met the mother of an injured young woman protester who is on ventilator support at the RML Hospital, sources said.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi enquired about the health of the students and wished them a speedy recovery, they said.

“Today, the future of students in the country is being trampled, and lathis are being rained down on those who raise their voices, for which Narendra Modi should apologise. The students' demand is absolutely clear -- the government should take responsibility for the paper leak and Dharmendra Pradhan should resign," Congress said in an X post.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has extended legal support to Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protesters who were arrested or detained during the ongoing agitation, with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announcing that the party's legal team has been directed to assist them.

Sharing the contact details of the AICC's legal team on X, Ramesh said, "The AICC has instructed its legal team to provide all possible assistance to those young persons arrested, detained, and attacked during the ongoing protests."

Opposition legislators of Bihar on Tuesday (July 21) staged protests outside the Assembly and Legislative Council against the police action on agitators in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

The opposition legislators, wearing black armbands as a sign of protest, staged demonstrations outside both Houses of the Bihar legislature.

"The students were marching peacefully in Delhi. The manner in which the brutal lathi-charge was carried out and tear gas shells were fired is a blot on democracy," RJD MLA Chandrashekhar Yadav told reporters here.

Yadav sought the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. "This government, which is against democracy and the Constitution, must go. This corrupt government, which sells the country to a few industrialists, has no right to rule India," he added.

CPI(ML) MLC Shashi Yadav also sought accountability from the Union government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (July 21) asserted that strong action was taken against those involved in the NEET paper leaks so that no one plays with the future of the youth, and said states should join hands with the Centre to tackle the menace in the national interest.

Modi made the remarks at a meeting of the NDA MPs here, a day after thousands of students led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) took part in the 'Sansad Chalo' march against irregularities in the NEET exam and to demand Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.

Modi told the NDA MPs that those found involved in the paper leak racket have been arrested and jailed.

The prime minister also told the ruling alliance's MPs that those guilty in paper leaks should be given the strictest possible punishment, with the support of the country's top lawyers, so that those involved in such a grave offence face exemplary action and such incidents do not recur.

Additional DCP Anand Kumar Mishra, who was injured during Monday (July 20)'s clash between police and CJP protesters, said around 115 to 120 police personnel sustained injuries in the violence.

"Several senior officers were injured, and I also sustained a hand injury. The investigation is underway, and an FIR is being registered. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings. We are looking into all aspects of the incident, and it would not be appropriate to disclose further details at this stage," Mishra said.
