SC reveals assets of top judges: 4BHK, Maruti Swift among CJI’s properties; know more

All 5 SC collegium judges publish their assets; appointment process of judges, including all proposals approved by collegium since November 2022 has been uploaded


In a bid to increase transparency, the Supreme Court has published the assets of 21 out of a total of 33 serving judges.

The move comes after a full-court decision to place the relevant details in the public domain was made. It also comes just before the superannuation of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on May 13.

All five judges of the Supreme Court collegium have published their assets on the website.

Info on public domain

The entire process for the appointment of judges, including all the proposals approved by the collegium since November 2022, has gone up on their website for public knowledge.

The role assigned to the high court collegium, the role and inputs from the state government, government of India have also been published.

Justice Bela M Trivedi has made public her assets, while Justice BV Nagarathna's details are yet to go up on the website. Besides Justice Nagarathna, the assets of Justices JK Maheshwari, Manoj Mishra, Aravind Kumar, PK Mishra, SC Sharma, PB Varale, N Kotishwar Singh, R Mahadevan, Joymala Bagchi have not been uploaded as yet.

Who owns what?

According to the details available on the Supreme Court website, CJI Sanjiv Khanna has Rs 55.75 lakh in fixed deposits and bank accounts and Rs 1.06 crore in Public Provident Fund (PPF), while Justice B R Gavai, who will take over as CJI on May 14, has Rs 19.63 lakh in bank accounts and Rs 6.59 lakh in his PPF account.

Among landed properties, CJI Khanna has a two-bedroom DDA flat in South Delhi, besides a 4-bedroom flat in the Commonwealth Games Village. He also has 56 per cent share in a four-bedroom flat in Gurugram with his daughter holding the remaining 44 per cent, apart from a share in an ancestral house, which goes back before Partition, in Himachal Pradesh. He has also been the owner of a Maruti Swift since 2015.

Owners of agricultural lands, flats

Justice Gavai has inherited a house in Amravati, Maharashtra, besides residential apartments in Mumbai and Delhi. He has also inherited agricultural land in Amravati and Nagpur and has declared his liabilities, which work out to Rs 1.3 crore.

Interestingly, Justice KV Viswanathan, who was a successful lawyer and became a SC judge in May 2023, has investments totalling Rs 120.96 crore and paid income tax of Rs 91.47 crore from 2010-11 to 2024-25.

Meanwhile, Justice Surya Kant holds residential properties which he jointly owns with his spouse in Chandigarh, Gurugram and Delhi. His assets include 31 FD receipts, which with interest, totals up to Rs 6.03 crore.

Diamonds, robust investments

Justice Bela M Trivedi's assets include a house at Dipti Bank of India Society, Gulbai Tekra, Ahmedabad, besides one under construction in Neetibaug Judges Cooperative Society, Ahmedabad. She has Rs 60 lakh in mutual funds, Rs 20 lakh in PP,F besides jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh and a 2015 Maruti Swift car.

Justice Sanjay Kumar has a detailed stock portfolio. His list of stocks include Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Cholamandalam Finance Ltd, HCL Infosystems Ltd, HDFC Insurance Co. Ltd, Infosys Ltd, ITC Ltd, NMDC Ltd, Olectra Greentech Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd etc.

Besides three properties in Tamil Nadu, Justice MM Sundresh, along with his wife, Subhaa Sundresh owns around 1,200 gms of gold jewellery, and 16 carats of diamond jewellery.

Other details

Between the period November 9 2022 to May 5, 2025, the proposals approved by the Supreme Court collegium for appointments as high court judges, and all their details, and the dates of recommendation, and whether the candidate is related to any sitting or retired high court or Supreme Court judge, have also been uploaded on the top court’s website.

According to a press release issued by the Supreme Court, "The full court of the Supreme Court of India has on April 1, 2025 decided that the statements of assets of the judges of this court shall be placed in the public domain by uploading the same on the website of this court. Statements of assets of judges already received are being uploaded. Statements of assets of other judges will be uploaded as and when the current statement of assets is received."
