Forensic report says Sikh guru remark video not doctored, CBI probe to be ordered: Delhi Speaker

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday (January 17) said a forensic examination has found that the video of Leader of Opposition Atishi’s alleged derogatory remarks against Sikh gurus was not doctored, and that a CBI probe will be ordered in the matter.

Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj rejected the forensic report, saying it does not answer the key question of whether Atishi uttered the word “gurus”. “She did not utter the word ‘gurus’, but the report does not mention it. The BJP tried to fan religious discord by using the video, and action should be taken against its leaders,” he said.

Earlier, police in AAP-ruled Punjab claimed that their forensic examination revealed that the video was “doctored”. Following this, the AAP's chief whip in the Delhi Assembly, Sanjiv Jha, demanded that Speaker Gupta take action for breach of privilege against minister Kapil Mishra for sharing the clip on social media.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report has now been received and it "clearly" establishes that there has been no tampering with the audio-video recording of the House proceedings, he said.

The FSL report, the Speaker said, exposed the "conspiracy" of a political party which hurt the honour of Sikh gurus by misusing Punjab officials. The assembly will now decide further action in the matter, he said.

Gupta said Atishi should meet him and apologise, else the assembly will take a serious view of it.

The issue of alleged disrespect shown towards Sikh gurus by Atishi in the assembly on January 6 during a discussion on the Delhi government's programme held last year to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur has snowballed into a major political controversy involving the ruling BJP in Delhi and the AAP-ruled Punjab.

Atishi has accused the BJP of indulging in petty politics by dragging the name of the ninth Sikh guru in controversy. She did not attend the sittings of the Delhi Assembly after the incident.

While Punjab Police registered an FIR in Jalandhar over the use and circulation of an alleged "doctored" video clip of Atishi, the Delhi Assembly has demanded replies from top police officers from the state over breach of privilege.

PM condemns assault on woman journalist during Beldanga violence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (January 17) condemned the alleged assault on a female journalist during the recent violence in Murshidabad's Beldanga, and appealed to women and youth to take the lead in ending what he described as a climate of fear and intimidation in West Bengal.

Referring to the unrest that erupted in Beldanga following the death of a migrant worker in Jharkhand, Modi alleged that journalists and ordinary citizens were unsafe under the Trinamool Congress government.

“Just yesterday, we saw how a woman journalist was mistreated by TMC goons. Under TMC rule, daughters are not safe even in schools and universities. Victims are forced to run to courts again and again,” Modi said while addressing a rally in Malda.

“This must change. And that change will come through your single vote. Your one vote for the lotus will restore Bengal's lost glory. The days of TMC's goondaism are numbered. Their politics of fear will end,” he said.

The violence in Beldanga was triggered by the death of 36-year-old Alauddin Sheikh, a resident of Sujapur Kumarpur gram panchayat area in Murshidabad, whose body was recovered on Friday from his rented accommodation in Jharkhand, where he worked as a scrap dealer.

A woman journalist of a Bengali news channel was brutally assaulted during the violence, while another suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Parties cutting across political lines in West Bengal have condemned the attack on the woman journalist.

Delhi HC rejects plea challenging Manish Sisodia's 2020 election win

The Delhi High Court on Saturday rejected a petition that contested the election of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, from Patparganj during the 2020 Assembly elections.

Justice Jasmeet Singh stated that Pratap Chandra, who ran as a candidate for the Rashtriya Rashtrawadi Party against Sisodia, did not succeed in demonstrating a particular cause of action in his election petition.

Sisodia had won the seat after securing 70,163 votes. The petitioner had secured 95 votes.

The petitioner had alleged that while he had strictly complied with the law and ceased from canvassing two days before the election, other political parties and candidates continued campaigning till the polling day, vitiating the electoral process.

He had also alleged that the AAP leader had not disclosed in his nomination papers the existence of a 2013 FIR against him registered under the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971.

Two from Gujarat held for duping elderly couple of Rs 15 cr in 'digital arrest' scam

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of defrauding an elderly couple of Rs 14.85 crore in a “digital arrest” scam in South Delhi, an official confirmed on Saturday.

The 20-something accused duo, Divyang Patel, 28, and Krutik Shitole, 26, both residents of Gujarat, were held from Vadodara on Thursday (January 15) and brought to Delhi on transit remand, police informed.

A court in Delhi subsequently ordered the accused to be held in police custody for two days for questioning, officials reported.

The case is related to a cyber fraud in which an elderly couple, living in Greater Kailash Part I, was reportedly subjected to a form of “digital arrest” by the perpetrator and pressured into transferring substantial amounts of money over a period of several days.

During the investigation, it was found that on December 29 last year, around Rs 4 crore out of Rs 14.85 crore was transferred into a bank account registered in the name of an NGO run by Divyang Patel, police said. They siphoned off the amount into multiple bank accounts in smaller transactions to avoid detection, police said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday (January 17) said the people have not rejected Deputy CM Ajit Pawar but accepted the leadership of PM Modi and the BJP, a day after the saffron party defeated the NCP factions in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls.

Congress accuses Centre of 'communalising education' over Vaishno Devi medical college closure

The Congress on Saturday (January 17) accused the Modi government of indulging in "communalisation of education" following the withdrawal of permission for MBBS course at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) and demanded that the college be reopened.

Earlier this month, the National Medical Commission (NMC) revoked the Letter of Permission to J&K's Katra-based college, citing non-compliance with minimum standards and extensive deficiencies in faculty strength, clinical material and infrastructure.

The order followed an agitation by the Sangharsh Samiti, a recently-formed conglomerate of right-wing outfits backed by the BJP, demanding cancellation of admissions to the medical college and seeking reservation of seats exclusively for students professing faith in Mata Vaishno Devi.

Congress general secretary in-charge Jammu and Kashmir Syed Naseer Hussain accused the Modi government of indulging in "communalisation of education."

"Admissions to students at the Vaishno Devi Medical College in Jammu-Kashmir were done based on NEET. The number of Muslim students in the final admission list was higher in the admission list; 42 out of 50 students were Muslim. This happened because the Muslim community has a larger population in that area. During counselling, most children chose colleges in their own region so they could stay close to home," Hussain said at a press conference here along with J&K AICC Secretary Divvya Madernna.

"Were the circumstances so serious that the entire medical college had to be shut down. Was no information taken about the examination system? In September 2025, permission was granted to the medical college for the MBBS course, so was no inspection related to infrastructure conducted before that?" he said.

The Congress leader also asked whether, just as the ED, the CBI, the IT and the ECI are being misused, the National Medical Commission is also being misused in the same way.

Raising the demands of the Congress, Hussain called for the reopening of the medical college after taking corrective measures.
