US navy veteran arrested at Nepal border sparks fresh cross-border security alarms
Arrest of California man Jordan Brown, featured in viral border videos, heightens national security alerts amid crackdown on foreign terror networks
A 36-year-old man claiming to be a US citizen and former Navy officer has been arrested at Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh while trying to cross over to Nepal without valid travel documents.
Meanwhile, social media videos have surfaced showing a foreign national, his foot tied with a rope, being escorted by local villagers and armed SSB personnel in UP's Maharajganj district. The footage captured the moment he was apprehended after allegedly attempting to cross illegally into Nepal via an unauthorised border trail.
A bizarre global itinerary
During interrogation, Brown detailed a highly unconventional, undocumented journey spanning several countries.
The police told the media that Brown's journey began in Thailand, where he arrived on a tourist visa and allegedly lost his passport. From there, he travelled by sea to Sri Lanka, and then took another sea route to enter India on November 2, 2025.
He then spent nearly seven months living in Goa before travelling to Bengaluru, from where he made his way to the Sonauli border in UP in an attempt to cross into Nepal.
"Brown was attempting to enter Nepal when he was apprehended without any valid travel documents or proof of identity," the police added.

The police are verifying his claims, and a case has been registered against him at the Sonauli Police Station under Sections 21/23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for entering India without valid documents.
Security concerns intensify
Jordan Brown’s arrest has intensified security concerns regarding foreign nationals operating under suspicious circumstances within India. His case follows a major crackdown in March, when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested US citizen Matthew Aaron Van Dyke and six Ukrainian nationals for allegedly infiltrating India from Myanmar via the Mizoram border.
All six individuals are currently in judicial custody while the investigation continues. On July 3, they were presented before Delhi's Patiala House Court..
According to the NIA, a larger group of 14 Ukrainian nationals originally entered India on tourist visas. They travelled to Guwahati and then to Mizoram, where they illegally crossed into Myanmar without valid permits.

Once inside Myanmar, they allegedly trained ethnic armed organisations and helped coordinate the delivery of drone consignments from Europe to insurgent-linked networks. Investigators claimed, according to reports that the accused maintained ties with banned Indian insurgent groups, supplying them with weapons, military hardware, and training.
Authorities say their actions directly threatens India's national security.
