Protests LIVE | CJP says ‘State at war with citizens’; Rahul invites all to SC march tomorrow
CJP-led agitations demanding SIR rollback and resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar enter Day 2; leaders say country being “pushed towards civil war-like situation”
Despite the Supreme Court's direction on Sunday (October 11) that people gathering peacefully should not be illegally detained, crackdowns continued in Delhi, with CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas being detained along with Left political and student leaders, and allegedly driven around in a prison van through the national capital. Brittas was allegedly pushed off the vehicle at one point and he was found in a visibly distressed state.
In the afternoon, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) held a Press conference, with its leaders asking why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was "desperate to protect" Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. "What does he know about the 2024 Lok Sabha elections or other polls that BJP won that you have to protect him?" remarked CJP leader Saurav Das.
The pressure group remarked that the "State was at war with its citizens" and that it had "created a civil war-like situation". They gave CEC Kumar 48 hours to resign, after which they would launch an indefinite sit-in and a nationwide “Election Commission Thik Karo” campaign. Leader Ashutosh Ranka said the movement would expand its focus to Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
In the morning, the apex court issued a notice to the Centre on a plea seeking contempt proceedings for alleged violation of the court's direction to ensure that there is no "complete prohibition" on Metro and train services in Delhi due to the CJP protest.
In a special sitting, a bench of justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to ensure that Delhi Metro functions as per its normal schedule, and that there is no disruption to internet services, subject to law and order conditions. The apex court also asked Mehta to ensure that lawyers, journalists and others are not impeded in discharging their professional duties.
The CJP and Opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of CEC Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, who were put under preventive arrest following their detention yesterday at the Delhi airport ahead of the Jantar Mantar protest, were released on Sunday morning after being produced before an executive magistrate.
They were released on condition that they would not "breach peace" for a year, CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh said.

From legal to first aid, support mobilised for CJP protesters; networks formed on social media
As thousands of protesters were detained across Delhi during the CJP agitation over two days, a network of volunteers, doctors, lawyers and social media influencers has stepped forward to help, offering everything from medical assistance to legal aid for the demonstrators.
The support to detainees and their families has been offered both by individuals, as well as coordinated volunteer groups, who are amplifying social media appeals to connect them with relevant resources.
A CJP volunteer, in a social media post, said more than 130 people were now working on a protest support initiative after a meeting of volunteers who had helped protesters during Saturday's agitation.
"We have about 130-plus people working on this initiative now. So I thought it was time to just turn it into a thing," the volunteer said in a video outlining plans to bring different support groups together.
The initiative includes a "Detainee Ghar Wapsi Yojana", aimed at arranging transport and supplies for people returning home after being released from custody, and the Immediate Response First Aid Network (IRFAN), which brings together doctors and volunteers to help injured protesters.
Another initiative, called PAUSE, or People Are Under Systemic Exhaustion, has been developed to connect people experiencing trauma and exhaustion with therapists offering mental health support, according to the volunteer.
The volunteer also announced plans for a scouting team to gather information from the ground, a creator network to keep journalists and others updated about developments at different locations and an information network to collect updates and pass them on to those who need them.
A legal aid network is also being set up to connect detained protesters and their families with lawyers.
"The lawyers, we need you," the volunteer said, appealing to more legal professionals to join the initiative.
The group is also working to bring together people who have started similar efforts independently. A central command and designated points of contact for each initiative are being planned to coordinate assistance.

Delhi Police asked me to call my parents at 3.30 am to inform about arrest: Dipke
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has alleged that while Delhi Police didn’t allow him to call his cousin to inquire about the death of his grandmother, they woke him up at 3.30 am and asked him to call his parents and inform them about his arrest.
“At 3:30 AM, the Delhi Police came and told me to call my parents and inform them that I had been arrested. What was the intention behind this? Waking me up at 3:30 AM and telling me to call my parents—waking them up too—to tell them I was under arrest? I asked them why they hadn't informed my parents all day that I had been arrested or where I was being held. Why didn't you tell them during the day? Why are you telling me this at 3:30 AM? Why not wait until morning?” he asked.
“My grandmother had just passed away due to health issues; my parents were already in a state of shock. On top of that, these Delhi Police goons and brutes wanted me to call my parents at 3:30 AM and shock them with the news that I had been arrested.”
#WATCH | Nagpur | Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) Founder Abhijeet Dipke says, "The Delhi Police came and told me that my grandmother had died. I then asked the Delhi Police to let me call my cousin who lives in the village; I requested them to bring my phone for just two minutes. They refused, saying they couldn't bring the phone and asked me to provide the number instead. I told them I didn't remember the number by heart and asked them to just hand me the phone for two minutes so I could retrieve the number and give it to them. Even then, they did not give me the phone. By law, I have the right to call my lawyer as well. The Delhi Police did not allow that either; they wouldn't let me call my lawyer. I needed to call my cousin—who lived with my grandmother in the village—to ask what had happened and how. The Delhi Police still refused to give me the phone. What do you make of that? They still wouldn't let me make the call. At 3:30 AM, the Delhi Police came and told me to call my parents and inform them that I had been arrested. Why not wait until morning? They insisted it was a legal procedure. What kind of legal procedure requires calling someone's parents at 3:30 AM to inform them that their son has been arrested? My grandmother had just passed away due to health issues; my parents were already in a state of shock. On top of that, these Delhi Police goons and brutes wanted me to call my parents at 3:30 AM and shock them with the news that I had been arrested. They have no humanity—absolutely none. They are goons in uniform—thugs wearing the uniform—and Amit Shah has turned them into such hooligans...I haven't signed any bond. We will take to the streets again; we will not be intimidated by people like Amit Shah and Modi. Throw us in jail not just once, but a hundred times—we do not fear your dictatorship. We will put an end to your dictatorship"

Ex-SCBA president urges Rahul Gandhi to call off October 12 march to SC
Senior advocate and former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Adish C Aggarwala urged Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday to call off a proposed march to the Supreme Court on October 12, saying it would put undue political pressure on the judiciary, according to a press release.
Opposition leaders plan to march to the apex court to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
According to the release, in a letter to Gandhi, Aggarwala said such a march would "interfere with the independent judicial process", especially as it concerns politically-contentious issues linked to pending court proceedings.
It quoted the senior advocate as saying that the CJI, in his administrative capacity, has no power to direct the CEC to resign or remove him from office.
Any grievance about the legality of the Election Commission's actions must be taken up through judicial proceedings before an appropriate bench and not through a political memorandum to the CJI, the release said, quoting Aggarwala.
The senior lawyer also asked the opposition to keep the CJI's office above political controversies.

CJP protest in Goa: Police detain several demonstrators, block entry to Azad Maidan
Goa police on Sunday detained several protesters who were heading to the Cockroach Janta party's agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Panaji, cracking down on them before the demonstration could even begin.
Authorities rounded up dozens of demonstrators as they arrived at Azad Maidan, and stopped senior figures, including former Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Ferdin Rebello, from entering the venue and forcing the protest onto the adjacent main road.
Several protesters, including CJP leader Amreen Shaikh, were taken into custody.
Demonstrators spilt onto the streets outside the Goa Police headquarters after police stopped them from entering the venue.
"We don't know how many of them are detained because they were lifting everyone who was heading to Azad Maidan," one of the protesters said.
Veteran lawyers Claud and Norma Alvares, former chief justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Ferdin Rebello, activists Swapnesh Sherlekar and Govind Shirodkar were stopped from entering the Azad Maidan in presence of Superintendent of Police (North) Harish Madkaikar.
Rebello, who leads the "Enough Is Enough" movement in the state, demanded that the administration cite the law prohibiting citizens from entering Azad Maidan, which houses a martyrs' memorial.

CJP Mumbai protest: Anjali Damania, others detained at Shivaji Park; Aaditya, MNS slam govt
Activist Anjali Damania was among dozens of people detained on Sunday when they arrived at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai's Dadar area to take part in a protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party, police officials said.
Damania was intercepted near the iconic ground and taken to an undisclosed location in a private vehicle, the officials said.
"As I reached Shivaji Park in support of CJP, police officers came in plainclothes and detained me. All the police personnel were in plain clothes, and I do not know where they are taking me," Damania told PTI.
Officials said most of those detained in the vicinity have been shifted to Shivaji Park police station. Some have been taken to nearby police stations, they added.
Legal action will be taken against those who are assembling at Shivaji Park to protest without obtaining permission from authorities, a senior police official said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said the BJP is in so much fear that even in Mumbai they are detaining students who are protesting peacefully but fearlessly against a regime.
In a post on X, the Worli MLA slammed the ruling dispensation and also offered support to those being detained.
"The Mumbai Police, it seems, now is being made to take orders from the very top- the very top that is hiding behind barricades of the police force. Do let us know where all you are being taken. We are coming. Also we will stand by you legally," Thackeray said on X.

Delhi Police release video of informing Dipke about his grandmother's death, refute CJP's claim
The Delhi Police on Sunday released a video to refute the CJP's claim that its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, was not informed about his grandmother's death while in custody on October 10.
It reiterated that the news was conveyed with due sensitivity and assistance was offered for his travel to his hometown for the funeral, but he "declined" the offer.
The video comes after Dipke's mother accused the Delhi Police of lying, alleging that her son had not been informed about his grandmother's demise on Saturday.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) also claimed that Dipke was not informed about the death.
Showing the video, Deputy Commissioner of Police (PRO) Neha Yadav said at a press conference that the information was promptly conveyed to Dipke, who was also informed about the scheduled funeral time.
"He was also offered all possible assistance to facilitate his travel to his hometown on humanitarian grounds; however, he declined to avail the same," she said, adding that he was also extended the offer to speak with his family.
Dipke's grandmother, who had been ill for a long time, died on Saturday at around 11.30 am.
