Protests LIVE | CJP says ‘State at war with citizens’; Rahul invites all to SC march tomorrow
CJP-led agitations demanding SIR rollback and resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar enter Day 2; leaders say country being “pushed towards civil war-like situation”
Despite the Supreme Court's direction on Sunday (October 11) that people gathering peacefully should not be illegally detained, crackdowns continued in Delhi, with CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas being detained along with Left political and student leaders, and allegedly driven around in a prison van through the national capital. Brittas was allegedly pushed off the vehicle at one point and he was found in a visibly distressed state.
In the afternoon, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) held a Press conference, with its leaders asking why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was "desperate to protect" Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. "What does he know about the 2024 Lok Sabha elections or other polls that BJP won that you have to protect him?" remarked CJP leader Saurav Das.
The pressure group remarked that the "State was at war with its citizens" and that it had "created a civil war-like situation". They gave CEC Kumar 48 hours to resign, after which they would launch an indefinite sit-in and a nationwide “Election Commission Thik Karo” campaign. Leader Ashutosh Ranka said the movement would expand its focus to Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
In the morning, the apex court issued a notice to the Centre on a plea seeking contempt proceedings for alleged violation of the court's direction to ensure that there is no "complete prohibition" on Metro and train services in Delhi due to the CJP protest.
In a special sitting, a bench of justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to ensure that Delhi Metro functions as per its normal schedule, and that there is no disruption to internet services, subject to law and order conditions. The apex court also asked Mehta to ensure that lawyers, journalists and others are not impeded in discharging their professional duties.
The CJP and Opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of CEC Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, who were put under preventive arrest following their detention yesterday at the Delhi airport ahead of the Jantar Mantar protest, were released on Sunday morning after being produced before an executive magistrate.
They were released on condition that they would not "breach peace" for a year, CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh said.

Abhijeet Dipke says detention won't stop CJP's protest
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has said his detention will not stop the party’s movement, vowing to continue the protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities.
In a Facebook post on Sunday morning, Dipke questioned what the government hoped to achieve by detaining party leaders, saying the action had only strengthened their resolve.
“What does the government think it will achieve by detaining us? Does it think we will be scared? This detention has only strengthened our resolve even further!” he wrote.
Dipke, who was detained along with CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai, said that the movement would continue despite further arrests and what he described as oppression.
“No matter how many times the government detains us or how much oppression it unleashes against us, our movement will not stop. Instead, it will gather even greater momentum!” he said.
He added that the party would not back down in the face of what he called growing authoritarianism.
“The more authoritarianism grows, the louder our voices will become. We will not give up,” stated Dipke.

Dhruv Rathee released at 3 AM after Gurugram detention
YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released around 3 am on Sunday after being detained at his Gurugram residence ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) planned protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, officials said.
According to an India Today report quoting Delhi Police sources, officials said they would take further action if Rathee tried to travel to Jantar Mantar to join the demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities.
Earlier, police detained Rathee at his home in Sector 56, Gurugram, on Saturday morning after he declined requests from Delhi and Gurugram police not to travel to the capital for the protest. Police said the demonstration had not been granted permission and prohibitory orders were in force in Delhi.
Rathee had recently returned to India from Germany and publicly called on people to join the protest. CJP condemned his detention, calling for his immediate release and alleging that authorities were trying to prevent people from protesting over electoral roll irregularities.

Abhijeet Dipke's father accuses Delhi Police of lying
Bhagwan Dipke, father of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, has accused Delhi Police of lying about informing his son of his grandmother’s death, saying the family has been unable to contact him and does not know where he is being held.
“We tried contacting him but could not succeed. Delhi Police is lying. If he had received news of his grandmother's demise, he would have come by now. His friends told me that he has been shifted somewhere else; he is not in Delhi...” Bhagwan said as quoted by ANI.
Abhijeet’s 85-year-old grandmother, Savitribai Dipke, died at the family’s home in Santuk Pimpri village in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district on Saturday after a prolonged illness. The family had put her last rites on hold while waiting for Abhijeet.
Delhi Police detained Abhijeet and fellow CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das after they arrived at Delhi airport from Mumbai. The detentions came ahead of the outfit’s planned protest at Jantar Mantar, where it intended to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged electoral roll irregularities.
Delhi Police said the three leaders were under preventive arrest and would be produced before an Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantonment Police Station. The family’s account raises questions about whether Abhijeet has been able to receive news of his grandmother’s death and contact his relatives.

Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leader Ajinkya Shinde has called for a protest in Mumbai at 4 pm on Sunday, following the detention of party founder Abhijeet Dipke and other leaders in Delhi.
Shinde, who was designated to lead the agitation after Dipke was taken into custody, said protesters would assemble at T Junction near Shivaji Park.

Over 30,000 security personnel to guard Delhi as CJP is set to resume protest
More than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed across Delhi on Sunday as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) prepares to continue its protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The deployment follows Saturday’s detentions, when Delhi Police moved to stop protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar after denying permission for the gathering.
More than 120 companies of Central Armed Police Forces are assisting Delhi Police. The New Delhi district has been split into 20 zones, with senior officers overseeing security on the ground.
Checks have been tightened at Delhi’s borders, railway stations and bus terminals. Police are also inspecting vehicles and verifying guests at hotels, lodges, guest houses and dharamshalas. Social media activity is being monitored for attempts to mobilise crowds.
The security operation comes as the CJP has announced that its agitation will continue. Police have appealed to residents to maintain peace and cooperate with personnel on duty, while advising commuters to check official announcements before travelling.
