Indian weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav continued India's medal rush, clinching a silver as records were broken in a riveting women's 53kg competition at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (Scotland) on Monday (July 27).
The 23-year-old from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh totalled 199kg (88kg snatch + 111kg clean and jerk), but Nigeria's Onome Omolola Didih stole the show with a stunning 206kg (93kg + 113kg), rewriting both the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records to take the gold.
It is the fourth weightlifting medal for India at the CWG and fifth medal overall.
Sreeshankar in final
Earlier, on Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games, Murali Sreeshankar booked his berth for the final of the men’s long jump event with 8.01m in his first jump. He needed to breach the eight-metre mark during the qualifying round.
If the jumper from Kerala had failed to cross the qualification mark, he would have needed to finish in the top 12 after the completion of two groups in the qualification round to make it through to the final.
The 27-year-old long jumper won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, behind LaQuan Nairn from the Bahamas.
India's Lokesh Sathyanathan also qualified for the long jump final, with a jump of 7.77m. He qualified with the seventh best distance.
Sajan Prakash qualified for the Men’s 200m Butterfly Final. He finished sixth overall in the heats with a timing of 1:58.59s and second in his heat.
Tejas Shirse qualified for the final of the 110m hurdles with a timing of 13.76s in the first heat.
Gurindervir Singh out of contention in men’s 100m
In disappointing news, India’s fastest man Gurindervir Singh has not qualified for the next round in the men’s 100m. India’s national record holder clocked 10.39 seconds to be placed 18th. He needed to finish in the top 17 to qualify for the next round.
Ghana's Abdul Saminu stormed through Heat 2 in a season-best 10.01 seconds, the fastest 100m heat time in Commonwealth Games history.
India has four boxing bouts lined up on Monday, with Sachin Siwach, Ankush, Sakshi Choudhary and Sumit Kundu all competing in the Round of 16. Siwach begins the boxing action against England's William Hewitt at 4:45 pm IST, with the remaining three bouts spread across the evening and night.

Samanta finishes 7th
Meanwhile, India's Protistha Samanta finished seventh in the women's vault final of artistic gymnastics competition.
The 22-year-old from West Bengal, who had qualified seventh for the eight-woman final, averaged 12.883 after scoring 12.700 on her first vault and 12.666 on her second.
Canada's Lia-Monica Fontaine clinched the gold medal with a commanding display.
Fontaine, the top qualifier, successfully retained her lead in the final, averaging 14.000 from scores of 14.000 and 13.600.
England's Abigail Martin claimed the silver medal with 13.799, while Wales' Abigail Roper took bronze with 13.433.
