This is the third incident of rape in a reputed educational institution of Kolkata within a year. The state is still reeling under the shock of the gangrape of a student at South Calcutta Law College.
Last year, the state erupted in protest after a trainee doctor was raped and killed while on duty in the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
BJP attacks CM Mamata
The West Bengal unit of the BJP attacked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape incident at IIM Calcutta. The party accused Banerjee of "protecting rapists".
“Mamata Banerjee has turned Bengal into the Rape Capital, where predators roam free and women are silenced. From Sandeshkhali to Hanskhali, her words and actions protect rapists, not victims. Nari Shakti of Bengal will soon teach her and her demons a lesson to remember for life (sic),” the BJP posted on its official X handle on Friday.
After the Law College incident, police asked educational institutions to heighten security and issued SOPs.
The latest horrific incident raised question as to how did a student enter the boys' hostel without signing the register? What were the security guards doing? Or is the accused influential?
Police said the role of the guards in the entire incident is also under the scanner. They are also investigating the security arrangements of the hostel in particular and the entire campus in general.
