Gujarat family booked for abuse, threats at Arunachal Pradesh resort staff

Four tourists were accused of verbally abusing staff, using sexually derogatory language and threatening employees at a resort in Dibang Valley


Four members of a family from Gujarat allegedly abused and threatened the staff of a resort in the Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh. They also used sexually derogatory language against the female staff of the resort, following which a case has been lodged against them. The incident took place Mishmi Hills Resort in Anini.

According to media reports, the accused checked in at the resort on February 18 and was informed on arrival by the resort staff that outside food and alcohol were prohibited on the premises as per the management’s policy.

Hurled abuses at resort staff

However, despite being aware of the restrictions, the accused, on February 20, brought alcoholic drinks from outside and became aggressive towards the staff when they reminded them of the rules.

According to the FIR lodged at Anini police station, the accused have been identified as Aastha Devendra Kumar Patel, Dhruv Devendra Kumar Patel, Smita Devendra Kumar Patel and Devendra Kumar Patel, reported NDTV.

The FIR stated that Aastha and Dhruv Patel resorted to using offensive, sexually derogatory language against female staff, adding that Dhruv Patel even tried to assault an employee.

Threatened to use ‘influential connections’

It further stated that the accused threatened to defame the property and get it shut down by using their "influential connections." According to police, the accused have been under relevant sections of the BNS, including those about assault or useof criminal force against a woman, obscene acts and criminal intimidation, along with sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

"We sent officials to verify the matter after the video surfaced. The accused had checked out on the morning of February 21" said Dibang Valley superintendent of police Ringu N, adding further investigation was going on.

What the resort owner said

The resort owner in a post on Instagram stated that even though they politely informed the guests that outside food and alcoholic drinks were not allowed inside the premises, they started hurling abuses at the staff, including the women.

"The guests from Gujarat, engaged in damaging property and behaviour that was deeply disrespectful and unacceptable towards our staff. They allegedly used intimidation and provocation, including claims of influential connections with prominent corporate personalities and organisations like Reliance Industries Limited, in an attempt to pressure and threaten our team," stated the post.

"We tried to speak politely, but they continued to get enraged. Our young staff, many from interior areas, were shaken by the incident," said Managing Director Chimi Linggi.
