Assam earthquake: 5.8 magnitude tremor jolts Guwahati residents

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Assam on Sunday evening, jolting Guwahati and forcing residents onto the streets in panic, the USGS reported


An earthquake has rocked Assam on Sunday afternoon (September 14).

"EQ of M: 5.8, On: 14/09/2025 16:41:50 IST, Lat: 26.78 N, Long: 92.33 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Udalguri, Assam," stated the National Centre for Seismology in a post on X.

The United States Geological Survey also confirmed the quake, measuring nearly six on the Richter scale.

Residents in Guwahati ran out of their homes onto the streets in panic. “It felt like it would never stop. For a minute, I thought I was dead. I genuinely believed the roof would cave in,” a report quoted one of them as saying.

No immediate report of casualties

According to a PTI report, government officials said that there was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property. "An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 has struck Assam today. The epicentre was near Udalguri. So far, there has been no report of any major damage or loss of life. We are actively monitoring the situation," stated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X.

The earthquake occurred at 4:41 pm on Sunday, and the epicentre was located in Udalguri district, officials said. The depth of the quake was 5 km. Earlier, on September 2, a 3.5 magnitude quake struck Sonitpur in Assam.

Panic in Guwahati

The earthquake triggered in severe panic in Assam with netizens takin to social media to express their ordeal as “earthquake near me”, “ Assam earthquake” and “Guwahati earthquake” trending on Google.

“The earthquake was so terrifying that my legs are still shaking,” stated one user in a post on X, as quoted by Hindustan Times. “It felt like it would never stop. For a minute, I thought I was dead. I genuinely believed the roof would cave in,” said a Guwahati resident, Anita Goswami.

Another resident said that initially the tremors were slow adding that she thought that the earthquake would soon stop. But when it kept continuing, she started to panic. “But it didn’t, and that’s when I started to panic. My brother was upstairs, and I kept thinking, what if the roof caves in?” they said.

“I felt the tremor. It was dangerous!!!” a user posted on X.

Bengal feel jolts

A report from West Bengal said the tremors were also experienced in parts of north Bengal – Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Dooars, Alipurduar, Coochbehar. "I could feel the earth shaking for a few seconds. I rushed out of my house as a precautionary measure," said Bikash Dey, a Siliguri resident.

Some people also blew conch shells, a custom believed to mitigate the impacts of a quake.

There was no report of any fatality or damage to structures due to the earthquake in any part of West Bengal, an official said.

Tremors in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh

People of the western parts of Assam's neighbouring states — Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh — also felt the jolt. Residents of Arunachal Pradesh's capital Itanagar ran out of their houses and shops in panic.

According to state disaster management secretary Dani Sulu, no reports of structural damage or casualties have been reported from the state so far.

“The situation is being closely monitored, but there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

The northeastern states fall in a high seismic zone, and earthquakes frequently hit the region.

Talking to X, Union Minister and former chief minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, said, "Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers are for everyone's safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert!"
