CPI(M) slams Delhi govt move to demolish Madrasi Camp slum

The party said the agencies under both the Delhi and Central government had “completely failed to implement” the Delhi High Court directions on rehabilitation

The Delhi State Committee of the CPI(M) visited the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura on Saturday (May 31) to protest against the demolition of the slum inhabited by Tamil migrants, scheduled for Sunday (June 1).

The committee members said the agencies under both the Delhi and Central government had “completely failed to implement” the Delhi High Court directions on rehabilitation, and argued that any law and order issue during the demolition drive would be the “sole responsibility” of the government.

Delhi HC order

In a statement, CPI(M) Delhi secretary Anurag Saxena quoted the Delhi HC order of May 9, regarding the condition of rooms in Narela where the slum residents are being moved. The order said, “The DDA (Delhi Development Authority)/DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board) shall ensure that all the amenities in the flats such as fixtures and fittings are available, by 20th May 2025.”

“In addition to the above, all the tasks to be undertaken in terms of the minutes of the meeting dated 1st May 2025, shall also be undertaken including facilitation of admission of children in the schools by the time the academic session begins in July 2025,” it added.

Lack of amenities

“Flats are in deplorable condition with broken doors and windows, damaged walls and ceilings, and without water and electricity facilities. It’s inhuman to accept that residents of Madrasi Camp can live in these flats with such extreme weather in Delhi,” it said.

“It's the BJP and the various government agencies which will be solely responsible for any law and order trouble tomorrow. This hypocritical role of the state agencies is a direct outcome of the anti-poor, anti-working class attitude of the ruling BJP. It's this very attitude which had led to a complete betrayal from its election promise of “Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan”, along with an ongoing demolition rampage on the jhuggis and the street vendors,” the CPI(M) statement added.
