Himachal: Man dies in Chamba flood; hailstorm lashes Shimla, adjoining areas

Gusty winds were recorded in Reckong Peo, Bilaspur and Neri while hailstorms hit Kotgarh and other parts of the upper Shimla region


Shimla, May 4 (PTI) One man was killed and about 150 livestock swept away by flooding triggered by rain in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district, officials said on Sunday.

The Met office in Shimla said light to moderate rain lashed several parts of the state in the 24 hours from 5 pm on Saturday.

Neri received 44.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Jot (37 mm), Nagrota Suriyan (24.8 mm), Narkanda (25 mm), Bharmour (22 mm), Sujanpur Tira (21.6 mm), Mandi (20.4 mm) and Rohru (20 mm).

The tourist towns of Kufri, Shimla, Chamba, Kangra, Dalhousie, Manali and Dharamshala also recorded light to moderate rainfall.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief at the death of a man in Dondra Nala near Cheli village and said the government would extend all possible assistance to his family.

Meanwhile, Shimla and adjoining areas were lashed by a severe hailstorm that lasted a few minutes. The hailstorm was accompanied by rain and a thunderstorm.

Gusty winds were recorded in Reckong Peo, Bilaspur and Neri while hailstorms hit Kotgarh and other parts of the upper Shimla region. Thunderstorms were also witnessed in Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath, Jubbarhatti, Jot and Sundernagar.

The Met office has issued 'orange' and 'yellow' warnings for light to moderate thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching speeds of 30-50 kilometres per hour across the state till May 8.

Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti was the coldest place in the state, recording a night temperature of 4.9 degrees Celsius while Una was the hottest with the maximum temperature registered at 35.2 degrees. PTI
