Ebola alert issued in Andhra; airport, port screenings put in place

Amid growing concern over rising Ebola virus cases and mortality rates in parts of Africa, the Andhra Pradesh government has officially declared a state-wide health alert.

Following warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO) and specific guidelines received from the Central government, state Minister for Medical and Health, Satyakumar Yadav, announced that the state’s healthcare machinery has been fully mobilized to prevent transmission and manage potential cases.

He noted that the severity of the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda is escalating day by day. The primary focus remains on strictly monitoring travellers arriving from heavily impacted nations, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, where transmission rates continue to escalate daily.

Preventive protocols

To prevent the virus from breaching borders, district health administrations are working in coordination with transport and border authorities to establish robust screening and diagnostic testing procedures. Dedicated health desks have been actively deployed at major international gateways, including the airports in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, and Vijayawada, to screen all incoming passengers and tourists.

Preventive protocols and district-level surveillance have been initiated at the Visakhapatnam Port following high-level discussions with port officials, and identical precautionary measures are being enforced across major inter-state road routes to secure land transit.

Health department’s procedures

The state health department has outlined strict clinical procedures for suspected cases to eliminate any room for local transmission within communities. Any individual exhibiting symptoms consistent with the Ebola virus will be isolated immediately under strict quarantine protocols, and rapid response teams will promptly conduct comprehensive medical examinations on anyone who has been in close contact with them. To support these frontline efforts, the state government has confirmed that it has already secured adequate stockpiles of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and specialized virus diagnostic testing kits to meet immediate clinical demands.

Drawing heavily upon the structural frameworks and operational experiences gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, Andhra Pradesh is building a multi-layered healthcare response plan. Specialized 15-bed isolation wards are currently being established within teaching hospitals located in the specific cities hosting international airports.

At the grassroots level, health personnel at every single tier are being systematically alerted and trained through virtual briefing sessions, ensuring that ground-level staff, including Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers, are fully prepared. This state-wide vigilance is reinforced by the Central Government, which is tracking incoming travelers at national borders and routing real-time data directly to state departments.

Public guidelines

In alignment with federal guidelines, the state health ministry has issued a strict advisory to the public to prevent any potential outbreaks. Citizens are strongly urged to refrain from traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan unless it is absolutely necessary.

Additionally, a self-reporting mandate has been put in place, requiring anyone who has arrived in Andhra Pradesh from an Ebola-affected country within the past three weeks (21 days) to immediately inform district health officials if they experience any onset of illness, facilitating timely preventive and curative care.
