Bengaluru woman kidnapped, assaulted over unpaid loan interest; 3 arrested

Police said the 30-year-old woman was allegedly confined for two days and threatened with the circulation of a private video over a loan repayment dispute


Three people, including two women, were arrested for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a 30-year-old woman over unpaid loan interest in Bengaluru.

The arrested persons were identified as Nazath, Reshma Banu and Suhail, police said on Friday (September 4).

According to the investigators, the woman was allegedly held inside a house for two days during the dispute. She was also allegedly forced to strip, after which the accused threatened to circulate a private video of her if she did not pay the outstanding interest.

Woman allegedly held for two days

The alleged incident took place between August 27 and August 31 within the limits of Chandra Layout police station.

In her complaint, the woman told police that she had borrowed Rs 50,000 from Nazath under a weekly repayment arrangement. She had also taken Rs 1 lakh from Reshma Banu around two years ago. According to her complaint, financial problems had made it difficult for her to keep up with the recent payments.

Dispute turns into alleged assault

She alleged that Nazath called her to her house on August 27, saying there was some work to be done. After some time, Reshma, her husband Suhail and two other people allegedly arrived at the house in Metro Layout.

The group then allegedly assaulted the woman with a knife and their hands and damaged her mobile phone. They allegedly forced her and her young son into an autorickshaw and took them to Kumbalgodu. She further alleged that she was beaten with a stick, confined in a room and threatened over repayment of an alleged Rs 11 lakh, including interest.

Private video allegedly used as threat

The FIR also stated that the complainant was allegedly forced to partially undress and was filmed on a mobile phone, with the accused allegedly threatening to circulate the video if she failed to pay.

The woman also alleged that she was taken to a lawyer near a market and made to sign certain papers before being brought back to Kumbalgodu.

Woman alerts police, gets rescued

On the pretext of going to the toilet, the victim alerted police. She was subsequently rescued after police reached the house and took her to Chandra Layout Police Station, the FIR said.

Based on her complaint, a case was registered against Nazath, Reshma, Suhail, Saif and others in connection with the incident, a senior police officer said.

Following investigation, three persons, including the two women, have been arrested in the case, police said, adding that efforts are being made to nab the other suspects who have been absconding.
