Bengaluru stampede LIVE: City police commissioner suspended; 2 probes ordered

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also ordered the arrest of representatives of RCB, event management company DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association

The Karnataka government has suspended senior police officials, including Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda, following the fatal stampede during RCB's IPL victory celebrations, which killed at least 10 people.

Central Division DCP T Shekhar, ACP Balakrishna, ACP Vikas Kumar Vikash, and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish have been suspended. The state government has also ordered two parallel investigations: A CID probe (an SIT will be formed), and a judicial inquiry, led by retired Justice Michael D’Cunha. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also ordered the arrest of representatives of RCB, event management company DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).

These decisions were taken following the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Earlier report: The Karnataka government on Thursday informed the High Court that the investigation into the stampede, has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) within the CID will be formed to ensure a thorough and independent probe.

The government submitted a status report to the court, confirming that an FIR (Crime No. 123/2025) has been filed at the Cubbon Park Police Station under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita — including Sections 105, 125(1)(2), 132, 121/1, 190 read with 3(5).

The case has now been formally transferred to the CID, with directions to constitute the SIT for further action, it said.

The High Court, earlier in the day, directed the state government to file a status report on the stampede.

Case against RCB and event management company

The Bengaluru police on Thursday filed a case against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and event management firm DNA Entertainment after the stampede, which left 11 people dead.

According to the state government, DNA Entertainment was responsible for managing RCB’s victory parade, while the KSCA organised the event.

What HC said

The Karnataka High Court directed the state government to file a status report on the stampede.

The court, after taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, issued notice to the state, and tasked it to file a detailed status report by June 10.

A division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice C M Joshi directed the court registry to treat the matter as a suo motu public interest litigation petition.

The court was informed that over 1,000 personnel were deployed; however, the crowd exceeded all estimates. The stadium capacity was 35,000, but at least 2.5 lakh converged, assuming there was free entry.

The stampede, which occurred during a felicitation event for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team after their IPL victory, claimed 11 lives and left over 70 others injured.

Karnataka govt to formulate new SOPs for big events

The Karnataka government will formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for mega events, meetings and celebrations aimed at preventing any untoward incidents, state Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Thursday.

The initiative comes in the wake of a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday that claimed 11 lives.

Parameshwara said that the government will take strict measures to identify the lapses that led to the stampede near the stadium, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations.

Stating that such an incident has never happened in the state's cricketing history, Parameshwara said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting and has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident under the leadership of Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner.

"If any lapses are found, strict action will be taken against whoever is responsible," he said, adding that he didn't want to go into details, because an inquiry has been ordered.

Govt was under pressure to hold victory parade: CM's son Yathindra

A day after the stampede in Bengaluru took the lives of 11 people during the felicitation ceremony for IPL champion Royal Challenger Bengaluru (RCB), Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son and Legislative Council member Yathindra Siddaramaiah said that that the state government was “under pressure” from the RCB franchise and others to hold a victory parade and hence decided to go ahead with it.

"The police had earlier said no to the parade. There was an error in planning. The crowd was larger than we expected. The government made a mistake in understanding this," he said, adding that “later, police said that the program can be held. They clarified that an investigation is underway to find out where it went wrong.” He also said that there should not be any politics over the tragedy.

Social activist lodges police complaint against CM, Deputy CM in stampede case

Social activist Snehamayi Krishna in his complaint to the Cubbon Park police station against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials has alleged that the administrators and organisers failed in terms of crowd management and making ensuring adequate security deployment.

"RCB is not a team representing the state. It is a private organization. A team owned by a liquor manufacturing company. The tragedy was caused by the government organizing an emergency event without any proper preparation, without taking necessary measures to manage the crowd," he told reporters. He also said that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were responsible for the tragedy.

The activist also dubbed the Chief Minister’s decision to order a magisterial probe into the stampede as of no use.

Lives more important than celebrations: Kapil Dev

The legendary Kapil Dev on Thursday expressed his anguish at the death of 11 fans during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations here, saying "lives are more important than celebration" and advised everyone to take proper precautions in future.

Nearly two and half lakh people thronged the areas near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday to catch a glimpse of their idols but the ensuing chaos caused the death of 11 people, besides leaving scores of others injured.

"I feel very bad about that. I think we have to learn from each other. Next time something like this (victory parade) happens, people should be more conscious. People do make a mistake," Kapil told PTI on the sidelines of a corporate event organised by the Arche Global Private Limited.

The 1983 World Cup-winning India captain urged the teams and other stakeholders to keep sanity while organising events of such magnitude.

"Mistake should not be to that scale where you are having fun and you lose lives. In the future, if any team wins, keep it calm. Lives are more important than celebration. Let's put it that way," he added.
