The three richest chief ministers represent contrasting approaches to wealth creation.
India's richest CM: D K Shivakumar tops wealth chart
The top three wealthiest chief ministers are from the South, but they hold their wealth in very different ways.
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is now India’s richest Chief Minister, with declared family assets worth Rs 1,413 crore. His elevation to the top spot has also revived an interesting trend: half of India’s top ten wealthiest Chief Ministers are from South India.
According to his asset disclosures, Shivakumar’s wealth is overwhelmingly tied to land and real estate. More than 80 per cent of his assets are in immovable property, including agricultural land inherited from his father and grandmother, as well as commercial and residential properties spread across Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kanakapura and Delhi.

He also owns Bengaluru’s Global Mall along with several commercial complexes. Shivakumar's movable assets, worth about Rs 273 crore, include investments in companies, educational trusts, mining partnerships, mutual funds and bank deposits. His declared liabilities stand at Rs 265 crore.
Wealth through land
Shivakumar’s rise to the top of the wealth rankings is closely linked to the dramatic appreciation of land values around Bengaluru over the past two decades.
Much of his wealth is concentrated in real estate assets that benefited from the city’s rapid expansion. His portfolio reflects a classic land-heavy strategy, with the bulk of his fortune tied to property rather than financial assets.

Unlike many politicians who keep a low profile about their wealth, Shivakumar has often been associated with luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, Burberry, Gucci, Rolex and Cartier. He is also known for wearing shirts featuring a customised “DK” monogram.
Naidu’s model
Before Shivakumar’s elevation, the title of India’s richest Chief Minister belonged to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who declared assets worth about Rs 931 crore.

Naidu’s wealth profile is very different from Shivakumar’s. Nearly 87 per cent of his assets are movable, with a substantial portion linked to the family’s shareholding in Heritage Foods Limited, the publicly listed dairy and retail company associated with his family.
As a result, much of Naidu’s wealth is tied to stock market performance and corporate valuations rather than real estate holdings.
Vijay’s approach
The third-richest Chief Minister in India is Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who declared assets worth around Rs 624 crore in his election affidavit.
Vijay’s financial profile stands out for its conservatism. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) report, he has more than Rs 213 crore parked in a savings account and over Rs 100 crore in fixed deposits across banks.
Unlike many wealthy public figures, Vijay has very limited stock market exposure. His wealth largely reflects earnings accumulated during his long and successful film career and subsequently parked in bank deposits and other low-risk instruments.

He also owns a fleet of luxury vehicles, including BMW, Lexus and Toyota models, valued at approximately Rs 13.5 crore.
Southern dominance
The concentration of wealthy Chief Ministers in South India extends beyond the top three.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also feature among the country’s wealthiest Chief Ministers, ensuring strong southern representation in the national rankings.
The contrast between the top three is striking.
Shivakumar’s fortune is built primarily on land and property.
Naidu’s wealth is rooted in corporate shareholding and the stock market.

Vijay’s assets are concentrated in bank deposits and conservative financial holdings.
Three Chief Ministers. Three very different approaches to wealth creation and wealth management. Yet all three come from South India.
Whether this reflects South India’s economic transformation, its political culture, or a combination of both remains an open question.
