Former Kerala CM V S Achuthanandan passes away

The CPI(M) veteran and former Chief Minister of Kerala had been hospitalised for a month

Former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan passed away on Monday (July 21). The CPI(M) veteran had been out of active politics since 2017 and was in hospital for a month before his death.

After stepping down as Chairman of the administrative reforms committee in 2017, V.S. Achuthanandan had been leading a retired life, coping with the natural frailties of old age.

Suffered a heart attack

As his health deteriorated, he was admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on June 23.

After suffering a heart attack, V.S. Achuthanandan was admitted to the intensive care unit of SCT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Though he remained under close medical supervision and ventilator support, he never regained full consciousness or stability.

The death was formally announced after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan visited the hospital and held consultations with the medical board and Achuthanandan’s family. He is survived by his wife Vasumathi, son Dr. V.A. Arun Kumar, and daughter Dr. V.A. Asha.

'A relentless warrior'

“V.S. was a relentless warrior of struggles that knew no pause. A fighter who empowered the progress of the working class. His was the unwavering commitment of a communist who shaped and led countless agitations that defined Kerala’s political landscape.

“V.S. had the rare ability to ignite passion in any society and the strength to confront any crisis head-on. With indelible footprints for generations to follow, the revolutionary leader now walks into eternal rest,” said CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan.
