Union minister L Murugan says Tamil Nadu will benefit from delimitation, slams Stalin

Union minister and BJP leader L Murugan defends delimitation and women’s quota, attacks the DMK’s stand on Centre ties and Tamil Nadu’s growth

As the debate over delimitation and federalism intensifies ahead of key elections, the issue has quickly become central to political discourse in Tamil Nadu. Union Minister and BJP leader L Murugan has weighed in, asserting that the state stands to gain from the proposed changes. The Federal spoke to him on campaign momentum, the delimitation row, and the broader electoral battle.

How is the reception for you during the campaign?

People are welcoming us wholeheartedly despite the hot summer. They are supporting us, and we are aiming to secure a margin of one lakh votes. We are working towards that goal, and with this kind of reception, we are confident that we will achieve it.

How is the Vijay effect this election season?

Crowds gathered for Chiranjeevi, Kamal Haasan, and Shivaji Ganesan as well. Crowds gathered for M. G. Ramachandran because he worked a lot for the people and the party, and no one received as much public support as MGR. Vijayakanth too had a strong following but could not cross 8 per cent vote share. So, the crowd gathering for Vijay is mainly due to his cinema fame. People are also observing the good and bad happening in politics. Vijay did not even go in person to meet the families of the victims who died in Karur.

Chief Minister M K Stalin says this election is an ideological battle between Tamil Nadu and the Centre. How do you see this?

If the DMK had worked along with the BJP, Tamil Nadu’s growth would have been spectacular. Since DMK did not coordinate with the Centre, many manufacturing companies that were supposed to come to Tamil Nadu went to other states. This shows that M. K. Stalin does not know how to govern the state properly.

Delimitation has emerged as a big issue now. Stalin has protested and burnt a copy of the delimitation bill. Your view?

Stalin has no right to talk about social justice. We gave 33 per cent reservation for women, and it should be implemented in the 2029 election. If delimitation is implemented, Tamil Nadu would get 59 constituencies. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have assured that no state will be affected and that states such as Tamil Nadu will gain more representation. The women’s reservation bill aims to increase women’s participation, but Stalin is opposing even good measures brought by the BJP for the sake of it, indicating that DMK is against women.

There is an opinion that if delimitation is carried out on the basis of population, it will adversely affect southern states.

Stalin is opposing even positive changes. Tamil Nadu will get more MP constituencies, increasing its representation at the Centre, without affecting existing reservations, and women will get more seats. M. Karunanidhi prioritised women’s representation, but Stalin seems to be taking a contrary stand, and I do not know why Kanimozhi Karunanidhi is silently watching this.
