From Agra to Guduvancheri: How a suitcase discovery unravelled Tamil Nadu Express murder

A red suitcase packed with dismembered human remains, discovered aboard the New Delhi-bound Tamil Nadu Express, has led investigators to a rented house in Guduvancheri on Chennai's southern outskirts.

A murder case has been taken up, and as per initial findings, the deceased has been identified as Hayutul Nisha, a native of Odisha. The alleged suspects are Manik Laskar and Bhagabati Maji, also from Odisha. Both are on the run.

The suitcase, carrying severed body parts, was found on August 5 when the Chennai-New Delhi train reached Agra. A plastic bag bearing the name of a Chennai textile shop immediately pointed investigators toward the Tamil Nadu capital. Agra police sought help from their Chennai Railway counterparts, who launched a detailed probe that has since yielded several leads.

CCTV trail leads to couple

CCTV footage from Chennai Central station captured a man and a woman arriving with the same red suitcase on August 3. The pair boarded a coach of the Tamil Nadu Express, placed the suitcase inside, and alighted before the train departed. They then proceeded to Park railway station and later boarded a local train heading towards Tambaram.

Police scrutinised footage from more than 350 CCTV cameras across stations between Chennai Central, Park, Tambaram and Chengalpattu. The couple’s trail eventually led to Guduvancheri, where they were seen getting off. Public appeals and door-to-door inquiries followed. Residents of a particular neighbourhood reported a foul smell emanating from one house. Officers entered the premises and found additional evidence.

Inside, investigators recovered additional body parts. Police also found human remains mixed with maida (refined flour) and vegetables, which had been boiled in a cooker. All recovered material has been sent for forensic examination. Neighbours told police that the three (deceased and suspects) had been staying in the house and that a woman estimated to be around 45 years of age had arrived only 10 to 15 days earlier.

Victim's identity established

Further inquiries established that the woman had worked in Tambaram and had previously lived there with her son. The son told police he had separated from his mother because of her lifestyle and confirmed she had been living at the Guduvancheri address.

Investigators allege there was an illicit relationship between the male suspect and the victim. A quarrel arising from that relationship, or a dispute over money, is currently being examined as the possible motive for the killing. The woman’s body was allegedly dismembered after she was murdered.

Police teams are conducting searches for the suspects while also continuing efforts to locate the missing head of the victim. Forensic teams are analysing the evidence recovered from the Guduvancheri residence and the suitcase.
