Tamil Nadu: Pakistan-based WhatsApp group under close watch

Central Intelligence agencies are working with state police to monitor these individuals spread across multiple states, and even Sri Lanka

A Pakistan-based WhatsApp group, with around 100 Indian members, is being closely monitored by security agencies across the country. At least 30 members are from Tamil Nadu, and state police claim the group named 'Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen' is anti-national in nature.

Central Intelligence agencies are working with Tamil Nadu police to monitor these individuals nationwide.

Tamil Nadu police say this group is similar to Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT), a terror group busted in Chennai in 2024. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Chennai police arrested 13 individuals linked to HuT, and efforts are still on to identify and monitor other members. It was then that another group, named Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen, with the same modus operandi, surfaced.

Even Sri Lankans are part of group, claims police

Now, the police is closely monitoring Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen, in operation from Karachi since 1962, an organisation which rejects traditional Islamic practices. It has attracted members from Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and even Sri Lanka.

A senior Tamil Nadu police officer said, “Many members from Sri Lanka are highly active in the group. Initially, HuT operated through WhatsApp and YouTube Live. It has been taking an anti-India stance. We suspect Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen may follow a similar path.”

Around 30 individuals from Tamil Nadu districts, including Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, and Coimbatore, are reportedly being monitored.

An official said, “We are closely tracking their activities, and no suspicious behavior has been detected so far.”
